Breeding, Marshall. OCLC sues Clarivate over MetaDoor and its use of WorldCat records. Jun 2022. Library Technology Newsletter. OCLC filed a lawsuit against Clarivate and its subsidiaries demanding that Ex Libris cease promoting MetaDoor in a way that causes its member libraries to violate policies and contracts related to records in WorldCat. The complaint, filed on June 13, 2022, claims that Ex Libris is prompting OCLC members to share collection data that includes WorldCat records to MetaDoor in a way that violates OCLC policies and the terms of subscription contracts. OCLC asserts that MetaDoor takes unfair advantage of its long history of building WorldCat as a near-comprehensive bibliographic database. Further, OCLC states that Ex Libris offering MetaDoor as a free service is an anticompetitive strategy that endangers its very existence. This article presents the basic statements related to the complaint without opinion or commentary.

Breeding, Marshall. ProQuest merges into Clarivate: an update on business integration. February 2022. Library Technology Newsletter. The acquisition of ProQuest by Clarivate rattled the library industry, in a bold move that further deepens consolidation. This $5.3 billion transaction brings ProQuest under the umbrella of Clarivate, a major force in the scholarly communications and intellectual property business sectors. Though not a primary publisher, Clarivate offers key content and analytics products including Web of Science, ScholarOne, Publons, InCites analytics, and Endnote. Clarivate competes with Elsevier and Digital Science as a workflow and analytics provider in the scholarly communications business ecosystem. By acquiring ProQuest, Clarivate extends its product strategy to include core library technologies as well as a major portfolio of database and content products. This acquisition moves ProQuest into the ranks of publicly traded companies. The merger was pitched to investors as saving $100 million in operational expenses across the two companies. Libraries naturally have an interest in seeing how these savings are accomplished.

The commercial landscape that includes the scholarly communications sector and library systems and services will take new form with the proposed acquisition of ProQuest by Clarivate, a large publicly traded company with diverse products and services spanning the scientific research and intellectual property sectors. This $5.3 billion transaction is the largest by far in the library sector.

In recent years, several companies in the scholarly publishing industry have expanded their portfolios with new workflow and analytics products and services. In a move consistent with this trend, Clarivate Analytics has acquired Kopernio, a company that has created a web browser extension that facilitates access to scholarly articles. The acquisition of the product further extends the tools Clarivate Analytics offers in scholarly communications arena.

November 19, 2023. Clarivate reveals World's Influential Researchers in Highly Cited Researchers 2023 list. Clarivate, a global leader in connecting people and organizations to intelligence they can trust to transform their world, today revealed its 2023 list of Highly Cited Researchers – influential researchers at universities, research institutes and commercial organizations around the world who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field(s) of research. Analysts at the Institute for Scientific Information have recognized 6,849 Highly Cited Researchers in 2023, from more than 1,300 institutions in 67 nations and regions. The evaluation and selection process draws on data from the Web of Science citation index, together with analysis performed by bibliometric experts and data scientists at the ISI at Clarivate.

November 7, 2023. Clarivate reports Third Quarter 2023 Results. Clarivate reported results for the third quarter.

  • Revenues of $647.2 million increased 1.8%, and decreased 1.3% at constant currency(2)
  • Organic revenues increased 1.7% driven by an increase in transactional and other revenues of 3.5%, subscription revenues of 1.3% and re-occurring revenues of 0.5%
  • Net loss attributable to ordinary shares of $6.6 million; Net loss per diluted share of $0.01
  • Adjusted Net Income(1) of $152.6 million increased 6.2%; Adjusted Income per diluted share(1) of $0.21 increased 5.0% or $0.01
  • Adjusted EBITDA(1) of $281.4 million increased 3.6% driven by cost savings from integration programs; Adjusted EBITDA Margin(1) of 43.5% increased 80 basis points
  • Net cash provided by operating activities decreased $44.4 million to $163.4 million; Free cash flow(1) decreased $38.7 million to $101.7 million, driven by timing-related, in quarter working capital requirements

We previously shared plans to develop and embed market-leading generative AI, including conversational discovery, into our academic solutions, and are delighted to announce that the Web of Science AI Research Assistant will be available for beta testing this December.


October 31, 2023. Clarivate report reveals China challenging US research dominance, signaling future research ambitions. Clarivate released a report from the Institute for Scientific Information which reveals that China's research economy has seen a dramatic increase in quality and its research is increasingly valued beyond its borders. China is also diversifying beyond its traditional strengths in technology and physical sciences to focus on new areas such as biomolecular science. China's research landscape draws on data from the Web of Science citation index of scientific publications and charts China's remarkable research trajectory over the last 40 years. The report shows an acceleration in published research output, which increased five-fold between 2009 and 2021, well outpacing the U.S. and E.U. Analysis from the Institute for Scientific Information suggests this trajectory is likely to continue.


October 26, 2023. Clarivate partners with EveryLibrary to support and nurture libraries in the US. Clarivate announced a partnership with EveryLibrary, the non-partisan advocacy organization for libraries. As part of the partnership, Clarivate has made a commitment to advance EveryLibrary's mission to safeguard and support libraries in the US.

The special coverage offers in-depth analysis of how the anticipated multibillion-dollar market potential for obesity medications in the coming years will impact biopharma, insurance companies and a patient population in need of safer options. The increasing prevalence of obesity across the world is driving interest among investors to be a part of a movement that is poised to change the health care paradigm. October 18, 2023. Clarivate renews partnership with the Federal Library and Information Network. Clarivate announced the renewal of its contract with the Federal Library and Information Network. This contract is in addition to the contract agreed with ProQuest, part of Clarivate. Together these commitments will equip government libraries and information centers with premier workflow management tools and cutting-edge research and discovery solutions.


October 12, 2023. Clarivate report finds significant adoption of AI in IP. Clarivate announced the release of its new report, Redefining AI: How IP practice meets the coming wave. The report explores the effects the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) will have on IP law, practice and processes, and the legal sector. It analyzes the responses of intellectual property (IP) and R&D professionals to understand their attitudes towards AI. AI-based technology has already shown great potential for enhancing IP management and decision-making, automating laborious manual tasks, improving productivity and the speed of research. According to the survey conducted by Clarivate, IP practitioners are seeing significant adoption of AI in their field. However, different roles within the IP practice and geographies considerably diverge in their attitudes towards AI.


October 11, 2023. Clarivate Healthcare Business Insights announces 2022 Revenue Cycle Awards Recipients. Clarivate announced the 2022 winners of the Clarivate Healthcare Business Insights annual Revenue Cycle Awards. In its 11th year, the Revenue Cycle Awards recognizes U.S. based healthcare organizations for achieving outstanding performance on revenue cycle KPIs, based on data from their most recent and preceding full fiscal years. The 2022 Revenue Cycle Awards recipients are Valley Medical Group – NJ and NY; Fairfield Medical Center OH; Valley Hospital – NJ and NY and Ballad Health – TN, VA, NC and KY.

Clarivate has acquired Patient Connect, a provider of patient engagement solutions that enable the measurement of clinical and commercial outcomes and inform the advancement of healthcare. Patient Connect patient engagement solutions improve patient outcomes by delivering clinical messaging to physicians and pharmacists at the point of patient contact. Clinical messaging is delivered in physician and pharmacist workflows, to help guide patients to better understand their treatment and disease and empower them to make informed healthcare decisions. Patient Connect has a global reach of 834,000 physicians, 600,000 pharmacists and 1,000,000,000 patients, by point of contact.

May 16, 2021 Clarivate to acquire ProQuest
Clarivate announced a definitive agreement to acquire ProQuest, a leading global software, data and analytics provider to academic, research and national institutions, from Cambridge Information Group, a family-owned investment firm, and other partners including Atairos, for $5.3 billion, including refinancing of ProQuest debt. The consideration for the acquisition is approximately $4.0 billion in cash and $1.3 billion of equity. The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, is expected to close during the third quarter of 2021.

May 13, 2019 Clarivate Analytics becomes a public company through merger with Churchill Capital Corp
Clarivate Analytics, a global leader in providing trusted insights and analytics to accelerate the pace of innovation, and Churchill Capital Corp, a publicly traded investment vehicle, announced the closing of their merger following the receipt of stockholder approval at Churchill's special meeting of stockholders. In connection with the consummation of the merger, the combined company was renamed Clarivate Analytics Plc, and anticipates that starting on May 14, 2019, its ordinary shares and warrants will begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange and NYSE American under the symbols CCC and CCC WS, respectively.
