Breeding, Marshall. ProQuest merges into Clarivate: an update on business integration. February 2022. Library Technology Newsletter. The acquisition of ProQuest by Clarivate rattled the library industry, in a bold move that further deepens consolidation. This $5.3 billion transaction brings ProQuest under the umbrella of Clarivate, a major force in the scholarly communications and intellectual property business sectors. Though not a primary publisher, Clarivate offers key content and analytics products including Web of Science, ScholarOne, Publons, InCites analytics, and Endnote. Clarivate competes with Elsevier and Digital Science as a workflow and analytics provider in the scholarly communications business ecosystem. By acquiring ProQuest, Clarivate extends its product strategy to include core library technologies as well as a major portfolio of database and content products. This acquisition moves ProQuest into the ranks of publicly traded companies. The merger was pitched to investors as saving $100 million in operational expenses across the two companies. Libraries naturally have an interest in seeing how these savings are accomplished.

In recent years, several companies in the scholarly publishing industry have expanded their portfolios with new workflow and analytics products and services. In a move consistent with this trend, Clarivate Analytics has acquired Kopernio, a company that has created a web browser extension that facilitates access to scholarly articles. The acquisition of the product further extends the tools Clarivate Analytics offers in scholarly communications arena.

September 23, 2022. Clarivate Supports Peer Review Week by Raising the Profile of Peer Reviewers. Clarivate celebrates Peer Review Week with the announcement of new services for authors to better track their peer review activity. This includes academic publications, citation metrics and journal editing, now all in one place within the newly launched Web of Science Researcher Profiles. Clarivate recently launched the next generation of Web of Science Researcher Profiles to incorporate the best features of Publons and ResearcherID, creating a one-stop destination for researchers to manage their academic profile and demonstrate their expertise, including in peer review.

September 21, 2022. Clarivate reveals Citation Laureates 2022: Annual List of Researchers of Nobel Class. Clarivate named 20 world-class researchers from four countries as Citation Laureates. These are researchers whose work is deemed to be ‘of Nobel class', as demonstrated by analysis carried out by the Institute for Scientific Information, part of Clarivate.

September 13, 2022. Newfold Digital signs agreement to acquire MarkMonitor from Clarivate. Clarivate announced that Newfold Digital, a leading web and commerce technology provider backed by Clearlake Capital Group and Siris Capital Group,, has signed a definitive agreement to purchase MarkMonitor, an industry-leading enterprise-level provider of domain management solutions. Under the terms of the agreement, Clarivate will receive cash proceeds of approximately $302.5 million. The transaction is expected to close in late 2022 subject to the satisfaction of regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

September 7, 2022. Clarivate announces winner of the 2022 Eugene Garfield Award for Innovation in Citation Analysis. Clarivate has awarded the Eugene Garfield Award for Innovation in Citation Analysis to the late Dr. Saeed Ul Hassan, senior lecturer in AI/Data Science at Manchester Metropolitan University. The award was announced at the 26th International Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (STI 2022) by Dr. Gali Halevi, Director of the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate.

September 1, 2022. Jonathan Gear assumes Chief Executive Officer role for Clarivate with Jerre Stead retirement. Clarivate announced that Jonathan Gear has assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer with the retirement of Jerre Stead from that role. Mr. Stead has transitioned to non-executive chair of the board of directors. Following the October board meeting, he will retire from the board, which has appointed Andrew Snyder as the new chair effective immediately following the October 20 board meeting. Mr. Snyder is CEO of Cambridge Information Group and Vice Chairman of Clarivate. He was previously Chair of ProQuest and joined the board when Clarivate acquired ProQuest in December 2021.

August 11, 2022. Clarivate declares dividend on mandatory convertible preferred shares. Clarivate announced that its board of directors declared a quarterly dividend of $1.3125 per share on its 5.25% Series A Mandatory Convertible Preferred Shares, payable in cash on September 1, 2022 to shareholders of record at the close of business on August 15, 2022.

July 26, 2022. Clarivate announces changes to the 2023 Journal Citation Reports. Clarivate announced that in the 2023 release of the Journal Citation Reports, all Web of Science Core Collection journals will receive a Journal Impact Factor. This means expanding the JIF from Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Science Citation Index to include journals from the Arts and Humanities Citation Index and the multidisciplinary Emerging Sources Citation Index.

July 20, 2022. BioWorld by Clarivate explores the concept of extending human lifespan in new report. BioWorld published by Clarivate announced the release of a new report, Extending the Human Lifespan, which examines the science around extending our time on earth alongside our quality of life. The report provides an in-depth analysis of the latest science, the key biological drivers that can be targeted pharmacologically and the companies developing these potential “Fountain of Youth” candidate drugs.

July 11, 2022. Clarivate announces retirement of Chief Executive Officer Jerre Stead and appointment of Jonathan Gear as new CEO. Clarivate announced that Jerre Stead, Executive Chair and Chief Executive Officer, is retiring from his CEO role effective September 1, 2022, but will continue as Non-Executive Chair of the Board of Directors. During Mr. Stead's tenure as Clarivate CEO, the company has nearly tripled in size both in revenue and colleague population, delivered strong cash flow, completed multiple strategic acquisitions, and aligned into a customer- and colleague-centric enterprise. The board of directors has selected Jonathan Gear to succeed Mr. Stead. Mr. Gear is joining Clarivate as CEO-elect and a member of the board of directors on July 11, 2022. Mr. Gear will become Chief Executive Officer on September 1, 2022, at which time Mr. Stead will become Non-Executive Chair.

July 6, 2022. Clarivate to exclusively provide citation data to the Australian Research Council for Excellence in Research Australia 2023. Clarivate has been selected to provide citation data for the Excellence in Research for Australia 2023, the country's national university research evaluation framework. In doing so, Clarivate will help the Australian Research Council to identify research excellence by discipline, across the entire Australian university research sector.

Clarivate has acquired Patient Connect, a provider of patient engagement solutions that enable the measurement of clinical and commercial outcomes and inform the advancement of healthcare. Patient Connect patient engagement solutions improve patient outcomes by delivering clinical messaging to physicians and pharmacists at the point of patient contact. Clinical messaging is delivered in physician and pharmacist workflows, to help guide patients to better understand their treatment and disease and empower them to make informed healthcare decisions. Patient Connect has a global reach of 834,000 physicians, 600,000 pharmacists and 1,000,000,000 patients, by point of contact.

May 16, 2021 Clarivate to acquire ProQuest
Clarivate announced a definitive agreement to acquire ProQuest, a leading global software, data and analytics provider to academic, research and national institutions, from Cambridge Information Group, a family-owned investment firm, and other partners including Atairos, for $5.3 billion, including refinancing of ProQuest debt. The consideration for the acquisition is approximately $4.0 billion in cash and $1.3 billion of equity. The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, is expected to close during the third quarter of 2021.

Clarivate Analytics, a global leader in providing trusted insights and analytics to accelerate the pace of innovation, and Churchill Capital Corp, a publicly traded investment vehicle, announced the closing of their merger following the receipt of stockholder approval at Churchill's special meeting of stockholders. In connection with the consummation of the merger, the combined company was renamed Clarivate Analytics Plc, and anticipates that starting on May 14, 2019, its ordinary shares and warrants will begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange and NYSE American under the symbols CCC and CCC WS, respectively.
