Breeding, Marshall. OCLC sues Clarivate over MetaDoor and its use of WorldCat records. Jun 2022. Library Technology Newsletter. OCLC filed a lawsuit against Clarivate and its subsidiaries demanding that Ex Libris cease promoting MetaDoor in a way that causes its member libraries to violate policies and contracts related to records in WorldCat. The complaint, filed on June 13, 2022, claims that Ex Libris is prompting OCLC members to share collection data that includes WorldCat records to MetaDoor in a way that violates OCLC policies and the terms of subscription contracts. OCLC asserts that MetaDoor takes unfair advantage of its long history of building WorldCat as a near-comprehensive bibliographic database. Further, OCLC states that Ex Libris offering MetaDoor as a free service is an anticompetitive strategy that endangers its very existence. This article presents the basic statements related to the complaint without opinion or commentary.

Breeding, Marshall. ProQuest merges into Clarivate: an update on business integration. February 2022. Library Technology Newsletter. The acquisition of ProQuest by Clarivate rattled the library industry, in a bold move that further deepens consolidation. This $5.3 billion transaction brings ProQuest under the umbrella of Clarivate, a major force in the scholarly communications and intellectual property business sectors. Though not a primary publisher, Clarivate offers key content and analytics products including Web of Science, ScholarOne, Publons, InCites analytics, and Endnote. Clarivate competes with Elsevier and Digital Science as a workflow and analytics provider in the scholarly communications business ecosystem. By acquiring ProQuest, Clarivate extends its product strategy to include core library technologies as well as a major portfolio of database and content products. This acquisition moves ProQuest into the ranks of publicly traded companies. The merger was pitched to investors as saving $100 million in operational expenses across the two companies. Libraries naturally have an interest in seeing how these savings are accomplished.

The commercial landscape that includes the scholarly communications sector and library systems and services will take new form with the proposed acquisition of ProQuest by Clarivate, a large publicly traded company with diverse products and services spanning the scientific research and intellectual property sectors. This $5.3 billion transaction is the largest by far in the library sector.

In recent years, several companies in the scholarly publishing industry have expanded their portfolios with new workflow and analytics products and services. In a move consistent with this trend, Clarivate Analytics has acquired Kopernio, a company that has created a web browser extension that facilitates access to scholarly articles. The acquisition of the product further extends the tools Clarivate Analytics offers in scholarly communications arena.

January 9, 2025. Three California State University Campuses join the Alethea Early Adopter Program by Clarivate. December 18, 2024. Annual Report released by Clarivate, the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Higher Education Press of China identifies 184 engineering fronts. Clarivate a leading global provider of transformative intelligence, the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Higher Education Press of China released the Engineering Fronts 2024 report which identifies the most active areas in engineering research and development. Launched at a ceremony in Beijing, this is the eighth annual collaborative report among the three organizations. This powerful and flexible cloud-based solution will enable Murata to make IP decisions more confidently, faster and more efficiently by managing IP operations from a centralized hub.


December 17, 2024. Clarivate announces New $500 million share repurchase authorization. Clarivate, a leading global provider of transformative intelligence, announced that its Board of Directors authorized a new share repurchase program of up to $500 million of the Company's outstanding ordinary shares through open-market purchases for a period of two years, from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026. The new share repurchase program replaces the current share repurchase program which terminates December 31, 2024, under which the Company repurchased $300 million of ordinary shares, including $200 million during the third and fourth quarters of 2024. Clarivate also announced that it prepaid $75 million of term-loan debt so far during the fourth quarter, bringing total prepayments in 2024 to $133 million.


December 12, 2024. Clarivate launches AI-powered patent search solution in Derwent. Clarivate, a leading global provider of transformative intelligence, announced the launch of AI Search in Derwent. Combining artificial intelligence with the premier source of global patent data, Derwent World Patents Index, this solution will enable intellectual property professionals to make reliable innovation decisions by finding more relevant patents in less time. The new AI Search available in Derwent Innovation uses a language transformer model to understand the context of the input text provided and return relevant results from more than 160 million patent records. It will help patent researchers, patent attorneys and other IP and R&D professionals perform accurate first-pass patentability searches, validate results to ensure relevant records are not missed, and navigate new or unfamiliar technology categories.


November 27, 2024. Daikin selects IPfolio from Clarivate. Clarivate, a leading global provider of transformative intelligence, announced that Daikin Industries has selected IPfolio from Clarivate. The leading air conditioner manufacturer will utilize this solution to optimize its intellectual property (IP) assets, enabling more confident strategic decision-making and sustainable growth. Clarivate has acquired Patient Connect, a provider of patient engagement solutions that enable the measurement of clinical and commercial outcomes and inform the advancement of healthcare. Patient Connect patient engagement solutions improve patient outcomes by delivering clinical messaging to physicians and pharmacists at the point of patient contact. Clinical messaging is delivered in physician and pharmacist workflows, to help guide patients to better understand their treatment and disease and empower them to make informed healthcare decisions. Patient Connect has a global reach of 834,000 physicians, 600,000 pharmacists and 1,000,000,000 patients, by point of contact.

May 16, 2021 Clarivate to acquire ProQuest
Clarivate announced a definitive agreement to acquire ProQuest, a leading global software, data and analytics provider to academic, research and national institutions, from Cambridge Information Group, a family-owned investment firm, and other partners including Atairos, for $5.3 billion, including refinancing of ProQuest debt. The consideration for the acquisition is approximately $4.0 billion in cash and $1.3 billion of equity. The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, is expected to close during the third quarter of 2021.

May 13, 2019 Clarivate Analytics becomes a public company through merger with Churchill Capital Corp
Clarivate Analytics, a global leader in providing trusted insights and analytics to accelerate the pace of innovation, and Churchill Capital Corp, a publicly traded investment vehicle, announced the closing of their merger following the receipt of stockholder approval at Churchill's special meeting of stockholders. In connection with the consummation of the merger, the combined company was renamed Clarivate Analytics Plc, and anticipates that starting on May 14, 2019, its ordinary shares and warrants will begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange and NYSE American under the symbols CCC and CCC WS, respectively.
