YOUNGSTOWN (September 6, 2002) -- It's a new "Millennium" at the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County as the new online catalog and circulation system by Innovative Interfaces makes its debut on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
The new Windows-based catalog will to be easier to use and offer more information and flexibility than was available in the Library's previous computerized catalog.
What can a patron expect in Millennium? An easy-to-use Windows-based format, which uses a mouse to navigate. The search function offers versatility not previously available in the Library catalog and patrons can continue a search or narrow the scope of their search easily. Patrons can search by using input such as title, author, subject or keyword.
In addition to the ease of use, in the near future, patrons will see features such as these: the ability to view their own patron record, see what books they have checked out and when they are due; receive reserve notices and overdue notices via e-mail; and place reserves online.
For patrons who feel they need some assistance using Millennium, Library staff will be nearby, but additionally, Meet Millennium classes will be offered as follows: Main Library, Oct. 15, at 7:30-8:30 p.m., and Oct. 22, 11 a.m. to noon; Poland Library, Oct. 16, at 10-11 a.m. and 3-4 p.m., and Oct. 30 at 1:30-2:30 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. Staff will begin taking registrations for these classes on Sept. 18 at 330-744-8636, press 2 at the phone prompt for "Reference."
The Meet Millennium class introduces patrons to Millennium, the Library's new online catalog. In addition to reviewing mouse skills needed in the Windows environment, students will learn how to search for Library materials, how to access their own patron records, and how to print or e-mail information from the catalog. There will be time for questions and practice.
The Library's staff has been learning how to use Millennium for the past few months in order to be well-prepared for the changeover. Many behind-the-scenes preparations are already in progress for Millennium's debut on Tuesday.
