Abstract: MuseGlobal, Inc. announced that the MuseSearch product for direct customers will incorporate support for the OpenURL standard Version 1.0.

SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO – AUGUST 19, 2002 – MuseGlobal, Inc. announced today that the MuseSearch product for direct customers will incorporate support for the OpenURL standard Version 1.0, an important scholarly information industry initiative. Under development by the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), the OpenURL standard is a syntax to create web-transportable packages of metadata or identifiers about an information object. This standard provides a uniform way for researchers to link directly from bibliographic citations to full-text articles, document delivery services, library catalog searches, and many other potential services for which a URL can be constructed.

The standard is expected to be published in mid-October 2002, and a trial period of use will begin January 1, 2003. The current MuseSearch linking technologies will be enhanced to incorporate OpenURL support with the intent of participating in the trial. “As a technology focused on information discovery, linking is already a powerful component of MuseSearch. We are fully committed to adding OpenURL linking functionality as soon as Version 1.0 of the standard is ratified”, according to Dr. Peter Noerr, MuseGlobal founder and Chief Technology Officer.

MuseSearch currently provides three kinds of linking from its search results: basic, focused and extended. Basic linking takes the user from a bibliographic citation to the full-text, when available. Focused linking groups a set of similar functions behind a single button. Thus, an “Availability” button can be configured to simultaneously check the local circulation system, those of related libraries, eBook providers, document delivery suppliers and ILL centers to determine where an item is available and under what conditions. It then allows a direct link to that service. Extended linking provides “one-click” linking from fields, words or phrases in record results to start a new search. This provides, for example, the ability to do a keyword search from a title field or a name search from an author field.

About MuseSearch

MuseSearch allows unlimited numbers and types of information sources, both internal and external, to be searched simultaneously with a single user query and returning an integrated set of de-duplicated results. Each search is translated into the native language and protocol of each source, so results are of the highest quality. Advanced linking technology provides the capability for further information discovery, and private user workrooms allow extensive post-processing.
