HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - July 15, 2002 - Sirsi Corporation, the leader in new-name sales of technology for libraries around the world*, announced today that an alliance of 35 Alaskan libraries, including the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, the Capital City Libraries (CCL) Consortium in Juneau, and the Fairbanks North Star Borough Library, will move to Sirsi's Unicorn Library Management System. According to Paul McCarthy, director of libraries and information technology at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, Sirsi will provide the functionality necessary for each library system in the alliance to serve its users effectively.

"Before selecting Unicorn, we had to determine if Unicorn would meet the institutional requirements of all 35 libraries, a process that involved requiring that Sirsi certify that it could meet the functionality specified in our bid documents; provide favorable references from current customers; conduct extensive and successful demonstrations of its products in two different locations, Fairbanks and Juneau; and have two institutions using Unicorn to be evaluated by our eight-member selection committee. Sirsi met each requirement easily - it is a functionally rich system, well supported, with an excellent reputation in the marketplace," McCarthy reported.

The largest library in Alaska, the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks contains 1.75 million items. Its collection includes one of the world's finest collections of Alaska and Polar Regions (APR) materials including rare books, photographs, motion pictures, and oral history tapes. Other libraries at UA-Fairbanks include the Biosciences Library and the Keith B. Mather Library, the research support library for the Geophysical Institute and the International Arctic Research Center.

The Capital City Libraries Consortium was created in 1989 to improve services to library users by coordinating information resource sharing and facilitating the implementation of new technologies in all participating libraries. Library users are allowed to place holds on materials belonging to any CCL library and have them delivered to the library of their choice. CCL members include the Alaska State Libraries, the Juneau Public Libraries, the Juneau Douglas High School Library, the Alyeska Central School Library, and the Egan Library of the University of Alaska, Southeast.

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Library and its branch library in North Pole, along with the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District with 10 libraries, have a combined collection of more than 275,000 titles. Services at the public library include adult literacy classes, materials for the blind and deaf, children's story times, outreach programs to the homebound and group residential centers, and air and mail delivery of materials to Alaskans in isolated areas.

Sirsi (www.sirsi.com) recognizes that today's librarians are on a mission to break down walls - barriers that limit the knowledge and resources accessible to library users. A partner with leading libraries around the globe since 1979, Sirsi provides software and services that assist libraries in breaking down walls, thereby promoting learning, empowerment, and opportunity for diverse user communities. Sirsi's portfolio of products and services includes the iBistro and iLink e-Library solutions, the Unicorn Library Management System, the Hyperion Digital Media Archive, and a full slate of services.

*Library Systems Newsletter, March 2002, named Sirsi the leader in new-name sales of integrated library systems for 2001. Sirsi held the same distinction in 1999 and 2000.
