The North Suburban Library System has recently signed a contract with Ex Libris (USA) for a Union Catalog and InterLibrary Loan services through Ex Libris' Application Service Provider (ASP) program. The combination of software and services ensures that The North Suburban Library System will have powerful, flexible software plus the convenience of having services hosted and maintained by Ex Libris (USA).
The Union Catalog will deliver information on holdings and circulation statuses across the system – and can be viewed by the public on a library-by-library or system-wide basis. Requesting the items will be easy and instant via the integrated InterLibrary Loan services. Ex Libris' ASP solution provides increased security, reliability and scalability over traditional library-owned, in-house library-run applications. Since the system administration is performed off site by Ex Libris (USA), North Suburban Library System staff will be able to concentrate on providing service and support to their public.
“Our system is large and complex, consisting of 2.5 million bibliographic records and 187 libraries, each using every possible library automated system for their local circulation and catalog functions,” said Sarah Long, director of the North Suburban Library System. “We were looking for a vendor who could not only handle the size and intricacy of our membership, but who could also provide shelf status. This is particularly important, as being a Union Catalog and vehicle for resource sharing is our sole mission. In addition to serving our functionality needs, Ex Libris sold us on their service philosophy. Ex Libris offered a global partnership of libraries with an agenda far beyond just bibliography.”
“Ex Libris' guiding principle has always been to serve the library's needs,” stated Carl Grant, President of Ex Libris (USA). “While we are maintaining the system, the North Suburban Library System will offer their brand of service to the public.”
