Abstract: The Abilene Library Consortium , a cooperative of four Texas private university libraries and one public library, has selected Sirsi Corporation''s UnicornConsortia Library Management System. ALC is upgrading from its existing DRA Classic system.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Apr. 15, 2002 - The Abilene Library Consortium (ALC), a cooperative of four Texas private university libraries and one public library, has selected Sirsi Corporation's UnicornConsortia® Library Management System to provide its integrated library system of the future. ALC is upgrading from its existing DRA Classic system to UnicornConsortia, which is specially configured to meet the special needs of library cooperatives.

According to Robert Gillette, ALC executive director, the Sirsi system provides the flexibility necessary to meet the complex demands of a large library consortium. "After evaluating several systems, the search committee felt that UnicornConsortia would not only meet our present needs, but would also accommodate our future growth," Gillette commented. "We also felt that Sirsi was the best choice we could make for a technology partner to help us successfully migrate from our current system."

Abilene Library Consortium, which comprises Abilene Christian University Library, Abilene Public Library, Hardin-Simmons University Library, McMurry University Library, and Howard Payne University Library, has a combined bibliographic database of more than 1.1 million items. The consortium provides a framework for cooperation among the participating libraries, providing for the sharing of materials, resources, and expertise. Through cooperative borrowing agreements, library users from any ALC library may check out materials from any other ALC library with much the same privileges as that library's own borrowers.

Sirsi (www.sirsi.com) recognizes that today's librarians are on a mission to break down walls - barriers that limit the knowledge and resources accessible to library users. A partner with leading libraries around the globe since 1979, Sirsi provides software and services that assist libraries in breaking down walls, thereby promoting learning, empowerment, and opportunity for diverse user communities.
