s-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands – April 11, 2002 – Geac announced today that Breda Public Library has formally accepted Vubis Smart, a new application from Geac Library Systems, a division of Geac Computer Corporation Limited (TSE: GAC). This acceptance sets the stage for the official launch of Vubis Smart in Europe that is scheduled for today and for launches that are planned in the North American and Asia-Pacific Regions for later this year.
Geac is introducing its newly developed, easy to use information management system for libraries, archives, museums and business intelligence centres. The Vubis Smart information system has advanced web-based functionality for searching information and objects. Vubis Smart transparently incorporates the latest standards in technology and information, emphasizing ease of use with simplified workflows and comprehensive reporting. Based on the latest Internet technology, users are able to better manage books, CD's, DVD's and videos and provide broad reference capabilities for electronic books and electronic journals in today's virtual library environment.
“Vubis Smart represents the next generation in library technology, building on the capabilities and expertise of the earlier Vubis product that is used in over 450 libraries in Europe and was developed in cooperation with the Universities of Brussels in Belgium and Eindhoven in the Netherlands. We worked closely with Breda Public Library and devoted a considerable amount of time on the pilot to ensure the system's stability, speed and reliability. We wish to applaud the professionals of Breda Public Library who were instrumental in assisting Geac implement a system ready for the future and we thank the library for their courage in being the first in the world to test and use a new software system during the last nine months. This is a major milestone for Geac Libraries,” says Eric van Lubeek, General Manager of Geac's Northern Europe Library division.
After development by Geac and an extensive pilot project in Breda Public Library, the system is in use in their central library and 9 branches. Breda is a city in the Netherlands with 160,000 inhabitants and circulates 1.5 million books per year.
“We are proud to be the first library in the world using Vubis Smart," says Joep van Dijk, Managing Director of the Breda Public Library. “We are excited to have been the pilot-site for Vubis Smart and involved in the first live implementation. In my view, there is no other library system in the marketplace offering the same features as Vubis Smart. The circulation system works perfectly, but the real achievement is the Web Interface, with automatic spelling correction based on fuzzy logic, offering advanced searching. With Vubis Smart, we have the possibility to improve our services for the people of Breda. It is our task to be an intermediate between the end-user and the enormous amount of unstructured information on the Internet. Thanks to the team of Eric Conderaerts and his software developers, Geac has given us the tools to reinforce our position in this field and to create new services”.
“The successful implementation of Vubis Smart in Breda Public Library is a major achievement and marks the start of the worldwide introduction of Vubis Smart,” says Jon Brooks, Managing Director of Geac's worldwide Libraries Systems Division. “Because of its meta-data driven flexible database design, Vubis Smart is able to address the needs of many different countries supporting not only Marc 21 and UNIMARC, for example, but also specialised archiving and museum formats concurrently. The InterSystems Caché™ technology that we use to develop Vubis Smart allows for excellent performance in the library as well as fast development and low maintenance. To complement this, Geac has developed a browser- like client to minimise the effort required to implement system upgrades. We at Geac are really excited to bring this new generation solution to market and delighted to see the successful completion of live trials at Breda Public Library."
