NEW ORLEANS, LA-- Jan. 18, 2002: Endeavor Information Systems announced two new solutions for digital library management that build on its state-of-the-art digital architecture, ENCompass. Endeavor is debuting ENCompass for Resource Access and ENCompass for Digital Collections at the American Library Association Midwinter Conference this weekend in New Orleans. These two new solutions ensure virtually all academic and research libraries an appropriate entry point to the continuum of needs that define a complete digital library solution. All ENCompass solutions are available immediately.
Commercially available since March 2001, Endeavor's complete ENCompass is the only complete system available for managing, searching and linking the varied resources of academic and research libraries, including locally digitized and commercially licensed materials. Most institutions are moving at their own pace toward the digital library, so the two new ENCompass solutions are designed to provide affordable entry points. ENCompass for Resource Access and ENCompass for Digital Collections allow libraries freedom to solve their immediate needs, while constructing a framework for future digital projects as the resources and demands on the library grow.
Endeavor's two new offerings are:
ENCompass For Resource Access— Federated Searching for Licensed Electronic Resources
Providing a unified multiprotocol search to many resources, ENCompass for Resource Access offers users a single search of all of the library's licensed databases plus the OPAC. Providing access by Z39.50, XML gateway and HTTP searching, ENCompass for Resource Access assures all of the library's electronic resources are easily searchable. The structure of ENCompass for Resource Access allows libraries to organize their collections in ways that meet campus needs, and ensures quick and easy set up for the library.
ENCompass for Digital Collections-- Object and Collection Management
ENCompass for Digital Collections provides tools that allow the library to easily create and integrate local digital collections. The flexible design of ENCompass for Digital Collections ensures that library's varied digital collections can be easily managed, yet with library-defined appropriate rights management for digital collections and objects.
Both ENCompass solutions can be used together for a full solution or independently with LinkFinderPlus, Endeavor's system for comprehensive linking for all of the library's resources, regardless of the software or information vendor.
"For the past several months, libraries have been telling Endeavor they want to get started on their path to the ‘digital library,' but they need an easy and affordable entry point," commented Jane Burke, Endeavor's President and CEO. "Endeavor has a long history of really listening to the needs of academic and research libraries of all sizes. We realized situations vary from library to library, so we wanted to make the advanced technology of ENCompass available to the libraries beginning their digital journey as well as established digital library leaders."
