El Paso Public Library adopts Horizon Sunrise to offer remote access to patrons

Provo, UT - The El Paso Public Library (TX) system is switching from a DRA Inlex system to epixtech's Horizon Sunrise and will be able to offer El Paso residents remote access to their main library and nine branches. The new Horizon Sunrise solution will be installed in June 2002.

“The number one benefit of the new Horizon Sunrise system to our patrons will be remote access to the catalog from home and office,” said Carol Brey, El Paso Public Library Director. “This is the number one question I get asked by patrons, and they are going to love what they see. The system is intuitive, iPac is attractive and looks so similar to Amazon and other Internet sites that it looks and feels familiar to patrons. The system is customer oriented and sensitive to the needs of patrons and staff.”

The library conducted an exhaustive search for its new system. The automation committee included Library staff, administrators, lead technicians, and a member of the city IT department. The committee spent a year analyzing four different library systems. After narrowing it down to two, they had staff from all libraries evaluate the two contenders. In the end the Horizon Sunrise system was selected for “the ease of use for the patrons, the look and functionality of the OPAC, and the fact that we felt comfortable that Horizon Sunrise works well in a large public library system,” said Brey.

The El Paso Public Library system serves a diverse population of more than 3 million people from the densely populated West Texas counties to the large Hispanic population of the border towns. “We have an enormous challenge in letting people know about the services we offer and reaching out to all of our community,” said Brey. “The high illiteracy rate (1 in 3) in a very high non-English speaking population and the absence of a strong public library tradition make our job of expanding our services a challenge. Our new Horizon Sunrise system will be a critical component to help us reach our community more effectively.”

The new system is being made possible through a $635,000 “quality of life” bond issue that passed in the spring of 2000. The library is planning on bringing up the new system this June and training 160 staff members.
