DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, Nov. 21, 2001: Endeavor Information Systems announced today that it has entered into a partnership with Openly Informatics, Inc., to provide enhanced access to resources through Endeavor's LinkFinderPlus comprehensive linking system. Endeavor will extend current capabilities on linking humanities resources by licensing software and a database from Openly Informatics, a leader in the development of hyperlinking solutions.

JournalSeek, a knowledge database that facilitates links to over 7,700 electronic journals in the sciences and humanities, and Link.Openly, a system for generating links from bibliographic citation data, will be integrated into LinkFinderPlus. This combination of data, software and XML linking formulas provides more flexible linking capabilities and an expanded network of linking targets, increasing access with less effort for libraries employing LinkFinderPlus.

Available in early 2002, LinkFinderPlus is Endeavor's solution to provide comprehensive linking for all of the library's resources, regardless of the software or information vendor. LinkFinderPlus is available as a standalone product to work with any library system and is also available as a module of ENCompass, Endeavor's system for managing, searching and linking collections. LinkFinderPlus is based on OpenURL, the emerging linking standard. LinkFinderPlus already includes over 5,000 titles in the Knowledge Database.

"Libraries are transforming themselves from physical libraries into electronic libraries and are very rapidly becoming aware that linking is part of their core mission," commented Dr. Eric Hellman, President of Openly Informatics. "We are excited to be working with Endeavor, a leading library automation vendor, because linking services need to be part of any basic integrated library system."

Hellman cited the evolution of linking from a solely publisher-based feature to a basic functionality that should be a mainstay for library automation vendor systems and libraries. "Over the years, we have worked to build a database of journal websites that can be accessed straight through to the journal homepage, the table of contents, and often, all the way to the article level," Hellman explained. "Librarians can use this knowledge to help their patrons get all the way to the information they need."

"While other linking systems force librarians to spend time loading the electronic sources and targets of information providers, Endeavor gives the library an entire collection of pre-populated resources in LinkFinderPlus. This is a definite advantage for libraries who want to hit the ground running with their linking system," said Nadeem Ghias, Director of Digital Library Development for Endeavor. "We are happy to be working with Openly Informatics. JournalSeek will enhance the already strong Knowledge Base of LinkFinderPlus, while Link.Openly will increase the available targets for linking."
