Ex Libris (USA) is pleased to announce AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals' selection of ALEPH 500 to replace their current library management system. Astra AB originally chose ALEPH in 1998 and installed it at six of its research sites around the world. The most recent decision to implement ALEPH 500 at the Wilmington (USA) and Alderley Park (UK) sites was based on the great success of the earlier sites, and means all eight main research sites will now be using ALEPH. ALEPH will allow AstraZeneca to share resources and the expense of developments with EDI, serials etc.

“We are very pleased that AstraZeneca has once again chosen ALEPH 500 to automate their libraries worldwide,” said Carl Grant, President of Ex Libris (USA). “Ex Libris is constantly looking to our partners for feedback on our products, and new technologies, and we certainly consider AstraZeneca's decision to implement ALEPH 500 at the Wilmington and Alderley Park (UK) sites to be very positive feedback.”

The new Wilmington system will run on the Sun Solaris Sunfire platform and will support 10 staff and 10 OPAC users. The conversion to the new catalog, which holds 27,400 records, will begin immediately and is expected to go into production in December 2001.

According to Mick Archer (Global Information Science and Library Project Manager at AstraZeneca), “I led the project to select ALEPH in 1998 and I believe our choice has been proved correct as it is still the most innovative and forward looking system available. It was also chosen because of its multilingual capability which is very important in an international organization such as AstraZeneca.”
