TORONTO, Ontario - May 30, 2001 - Geac Computer Corporation Limited (TSE: GAC), a leading global provider of mission critical software and systems solutions, today announced the appointment of Paul D. Birch to the position of Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer.
Mr. Birch, who has a successful history of growing global software businesses and implementing strategic cost containment in multiple markets, will continue as a Member of Geac's Board of Directors, which he joined in September, 2000, where he also serves as Chairman of the Audit Committee. In his new role, he will report to Geac's Chief Executive Officer, John E. Caldwell. "Paul is a great addition to the team," said Mr. Caldwell. "He brings deep experience in the key management, finance and operational disciplines to assist the Company's return to global growth and higher profitability."
Prior to joining Geac, Mr. Birch was a Director, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Escher Group Limited, where he was instrumental in doubling the size of the company and delivering recent quarter on quarter global revenue growth of 40%. Before that, Mr. Birch was Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of MRO Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: MROI), a U.S.-based global software application developer and marketer. During his tenure at MRO Software, he was a member of the senior management team that took the company from minimal stockholder value to approximately $2 billion in market capitalization, negotiated and successfully integrated seven global acquisitions, and established additional new business operations in, Asia, Europe and Latin America. Mr. Birch also served with Arthur Andersen in London and PricewaterhouseCoopers in Boston, where he focused primarily in the areas of international taxation and mergers and acquisitions.
"We are delighted to have Paul as a key member of senior management," said Charles S. Jones, Chairman of the Board. "He brings substantial leadership and experience to the Company - strategic profit improvement, a proven track record of growing global software businesses, and a deep background in successfully and cost-effectively integrating acquisitions on a global scale. The entire Board welcomes him to the management team."
According to Mr. Birch, Geac, like most software companies today, continues to face a number of market challenges globally but is in a position to begin implementation of successful short-and long-term strategies for dealing with them. "It is time to strategically establish Geac for the technology market globally and to build effective planning strategies that place the Company in a growth position," he said. "I am truly excited at the prospect of working with the management team in focusing our resources and building growth around our strong businesses."
