Minnetonka, MN—Hennepin County Public Library, long one of the country's most forward-thinking public libraries, has chosen epixtech's Horizon Sunrise system as their future library automation system. The library has used epixtech's Dynix system since 1993. They will be using Horizon Sunrise's Public Core PAK, EasyAsk, epixtech's training services, and a materials handling interface. Hennepin County Public Library was named the second best library in the country among libraries serving more than 500,000 people according to the Hennen American Public Library Rating in 1999. This rating takes into account a variety of input and output measures, including circulation, expenditure, visits, volumes, etc. The library system serves a population of 735,000 (475,000 registered patrons), with annual circulation of 10.6 million, 400,000 bibliographic records, and 26 branches throughout suburban Hennepin County.
Sharon Charles, the Library's Manager of eLibrary and Information Technology Services, expects that epixtech's Horizon Sunrise will provide significant improvements in service and business function over the current Dynix system. “Hennepin County Library is pursuing four strategies to address its mission and guide the development of its strategic action plans during the next few years: incorporating both traditional and emerging formats and sources of information and ideas; committing to excellence in service redesign to improve effectiveness with available resources, removing barriers to accessibility and increasing the ability of the user to become self-reliant; incorporating the most promising of new and emerging technologies; and finally, creating an environment that fosters innovation. We see Horizon Sunrise providing an essential backdrop for moving forward with the automation-related aspects of these strategies.”
“Hennepin County Library is an interesting and rewarding library to serve,” states Lana Porter, President and CEO of epixtech. “They offer so many programs in addition to traditional library undertakings, such as fostering adult literacy, children's and teen programs, and programs in their community. Their PenPals series, an author lecture series sponsored by the library with speakers such as authors Tom Wolfe and Anna Quindlan, is something really extraordinary. We are very proud that they have decided to continue with epixtech's library automation software. They have shown a great deal of confidence in our services, our development, and our products through this move.”
