HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Apr. 6, 2001) The Suburban Library Cooperative, a consortium of 20 public libraries in Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties, Mich., has selected Sirsi Corporation's UnicornConsorti@ Library Management System to provide library users and staff with a highly efficient, easy-to-use automation system. According to Tammy Turgeon, Cooperative director, UnicornConsorti@ will enable member libraries to provide additional service to patrons through the iBistro Electronic Library and Hyperion Digital Media Archive.

Established in 1977 as the Library Cooperative of Macomb, the Suburban Library Cooperative is one of 14 library cooperatives in Michigan. In addition to providing member libraries with services ranging from automated circulation of library materials to access to the Internet, it assists them with efforts to better serve the public. A shared database of more than 2 million items provides approximately 400,000 registered patrons with easy access to information sources.

Turgeon commented, “We wanted to make sure our patrons would receive maximum benefit from the new automation system we selected. The most exciting part of the SIRSI software is iBistro-we're sure its features will impress our patrons. The ‘what others are reading' lists that list the most popular authors, subjects, and titles is a useful tool for the staff as well as the public. Patrons being able to be notified when a title by a favorite author is put in the catalog so that they can put a hold on it is also nice. And the look of an ‘Internet bookstore' like Amazon is very appealing to our patrons.

“We also like the WorkFlows staff client, because all the functions are available to the staff without logging in and out of different modules. All of the necessary tools they need to do their jobs will be on the screen in front of them.

“Concerning our plans for Hyperion Digital Media Archive, the Cooperative's Local History Roundtable has been meeting to discuss what they might do. The possibilities are endless!”

SIRSI, the leader in library technology since 1979, delivers advanced software and services for libraries around the globe. By providing the industry's most complete library management infrastructure and unique solutions for capitalizing on the power, speed, and versatility of the Internet, SIRSI and our clients are changing the way the world shares knowledge.
