DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, Mar. 27, 2001: Endeavor Information Systems announced that Harry Samuels joined Endeavor Information Systems as the Digital Library Projects Coordinator. In this role, Samuels works with the Endeavor Digital Library Development staff in the timing and functionality of digital library products. Samuels ensures that Endeavor's digital library goals anticipate and reflect the needs of the changing library marketplace and adherence to emerging digital standards. Samuels is integral in Endeavor's current implementation of Open Linking Technologies into both ENCompass and the Citation Server electronic database management system.
"ENCompass is a unique way to organize your collections in the digital realm," Samuels explained. "That's what libraries do—organize information. ENCompass facilitates this process and also provides the navigation to access these collections."
"The amount of digital content in libraries is growing quickly, with the bulk of this content being subscriptions to e-content, whether they are abstracting & indexing databases or full text databases. The quantity of materials that libraries can access electronically is growing by leaps & bounds, and along with that, many libraries are racing to mount their own local digital collections because of the growing interest in electronic access to special collections," Samuels said. "Libraries are providing more and more digital content, yet people are having difficulty in discovering what they can actually access."
"Libraries have many jewels in their collections, yet people have difficulty in finding them," he stated. "ENCompass is a tool that tells people about the information in different collection silos, across different types of descriptive metadata, and provides access to all of that information with a unified search interface."
Formerly Assistant University Librarian for Information Technology at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, Samuels has an extensive career that combines library experience with knowledge of new and existing technologies. Previous to his most recent position at Northwestern, Samuels was Head of the Library Management Systems Department, implementing the University's first Unix-based systems. He was also a member of the University's Information Technology Coordinating Committee and CIO Roundtable, and co-chair of the Library's Electronic Collections Committee.
While at Northwestern, Samuels was extensively involved with the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), a consortium of the universities in the Big Ten Athletic Conference and the University of Chicago. He was the chair of the CIC Library Automation Directors Committee, chair of the CIC's Inter-CIC Interlibrary Loan/Document Request Server Specifications Team and participated in the CIC's Authentication and Authorization Project. He was also integral in OCLC's Interlibrary Loan Interoperability Task Force, which advised OCLC on how its interlibrary loan system should interact with other interlibrary loan systems through the ISO 10160/10161 protocol.
A member of the American Library Association, Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), and the American Society for Information Science and Technology, Samuels has served on the LITA Legislation and Regulation Committee and is currently a candidate for the LITA Board of Directors.
ENCompass applies new technology standards like XML, EAD and Dublin Core to organize and access electronic resources. ENCompass provides seamless searching across digital object collections while managing and controlling links for separate repositories. ENCompass ties together resources, creating a more effective research base.
