Release B

Automated Circulation Back-up System Level 1

A portable barcode reader will be used to record and store fundamental circulation transactions should the main LS/2000 system, or communications to the main system, fail. When the main system returns to normal operation, the back-up system will transmit to the main system those transactions which took place while the main system was not available. (This function will be available to LS/2000 users prior to the scheduled release date if required.)
Serials Control Enhancements Level 1
Additional data elements in the LS/2000 item record will allow users to enter copy-specific information about their serials in accordance with ANSI standards for the detailed level.
Reserve Book Room
Many, if not most, academic libraries have a special area known as a reserve book room in which materials are kept under special circulation control. The Reserve Book Room features of LS/2000 will allow operators to loan materials for special time periods as short as less than an hour to several days. Materials will be accessible by course title and/or number and by instructor's name. Reserve Book Room functions will be integrated with the regular circulation functions for check-in, check-out, hold, renew, etc. Authorized LS/2000 operators will be able to assign items to a secondary location, including but not limited to a Reserve Book Room, for subsequent circulation to patrons.
RELEASE C
Scheduled For Release January 1985

Automated Circulation Back-Up System Level 2

A micro-processor based back-up system will record and store fundamental circulation transactions should the main LS/2000 system, or communications to the main system, fail. When the main system returns to normal operation, the back-up system will transmit to the main system those transactions which took place while the main system was not available. The micro-processor system will allow more than one circulation back-up terminal to be run per unit thus saving the institution hardware costs.
Patron Self Service
Patron Self-Service features of LS/2000 will allow patrons to check-out materials to themselves and place holds on materials for themselves at LS/2000 terminals dedicated to patron self-service.
Additional Enhancements to LS/2000 Subsystems
These enhancements will be based upon the needs of LS/2000 users. The exact enhancements to be included will be determined after discussion with LS/2000 users..
Scheduled for Development In 1985

A link to OCLC's central system

Automated links to the subsystems and functions of OCLC's central system will make the resources of OCLC central system, such as the Online Union Catalog and OCLC's Interlibrary Loan Subsystem, available from an LS/2000 terminal. As appropriate, the functions of the LS/2000 and the OCLC central system will be integrated.
Serials Control Subsystem
A Serials Control Subsystem will provide features such as next-issue prediction for check-in, the storage of routing list information and the production of routing slips, automated production of claims, inventory control support and a link to the acquisitions capabilities.
Acquisitions Subsystem
An Acquisitions Subsystem will allow users to perform acquisitions functions such as maintaining an online vendor file, creating single-title, multiple-title and cumulative orders online, calculating discounts and transmitting orders to vendors. Fund accounting and claims will be part of the fully-developed Acquisitions Subsystem.
While this summary details the plans for enhancements and new modules for LS/2000, OCLC cannot guarantee the specific release dates planned or specific features of individual functions which are based on user requirements and may change.
