Abstract: The Mississippi Department of Archives and History has signed an agreement with Ex Libris Inc. for the installation of an ALEPH 500 system.

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History, established in 1902 (the second oldest department of archives and history in the United States) has signed an agreement with Ex Libris (USA) Inc. for the installation of an ALEPH 500 system.

The Archives and Library Division collects, preserves, and provides access to the archival resources of the state of Mississippi. These resources include unique archival materials as well as published works concerning the history of Mississippi. The Department also administers the following major public programs: 1). state archives and library, 2). museums and historic sites, 3). historic preservation programs, 4) public records management and 5) publication programs.

H.T. Holmes, Archives and Library Division Director, said: "We believe that ALEPH 500 will give us the flexibility needed to meet our requirements. The Archives and Library Division has an electronic records archives section that appraises, accessions and maintains archival electronic records of state government. ALEPH 500`s adherence to open systems and standards, such as an SQL-compliant database and the ability to run Linux, will facilitate not only the long-term preservation of archival information but also enable a seamless interaction with other network components already in place.

Mr. Carl Grant, President of Ex Libris said "The Mississippi Department of Archives and History made history by being the first of what we believe will be many North American museum and archival libraries that find the ALEPH 500 system an attractive and very viable solution for making their collections available to a wider audience. We applaud MDAH`s vision in leading the way."

The ALEPH 500 system being installed will serve 6 staff users and 12 PAC users and is scheduled to be in production in six months running on an Intel/Linux platform.
