HOPKINTON, Mass.-- June 26, 1998 -- EMC Corporation announced today that KnowledgeCite Inc., a developer of web-based scholarly research services, has selected EMC Web Site Management Services to manage the KnowledgeCite Library, which will debut at the American Libraries Association conference in Washington, D.C. this weekend.
"EMC's management of our Web site is absolutely vital to the success of the KnowledgeCite Library," said Peter Ciuffetti, President of KnowledgeCite. "Our evaluation of Web site vendors determined that the technology that mattered the most is storage. EMC's high degree of expertise in various computer environments, combined with the ability of the Symmetrix Enterprise Storage system to support virtually any server, provides us with the flexibility we need to maneuver in the fast paced Internet market."
"As the first bibliographic reference resource to combine web-based searching with the same sophisticated searching tools used by research librarians, the KnowledgeCite Library will be accessed by many thousands of researchers and students around the world. Can you imagine a digital library that's not available at exam time? Reliable access is an absolute requirement for our customers and the success of our business. EMC's ultra-reliable, high-performance storage systems combined with its network of multiple T3 connections to the Internet ensure rapid and uninterrupted retrieval and delivery of information to our users.
"EMC is also the perfect choice for KnowledgeCite because of its ability to provide us with a scalable architecture," Ciuffetti added. "This will be absolutely essential as we grow and need to respond to an ever-increasing volume of end users.
Through the Web Site Management Services, EMC sets up, maintains, and monitors all the technical aspects of a company's Internet presence, including management of Internet-based electronic commerce and database applications, as well as Web and online advertising. Via EMC's state-of-the-art Internet data center, communication is provided by redundant, high-speed T3 and other telecommunications lines and multiple Internet access providers to insure continuous site access. The electronic firewall-protected center is equipped with redundant servers, redundant storage systems, Inergen fire suppression systems, as well as electric generating capabilities in the event of a power failure.
From a state-.of-the-art data center, EMC's Web Site Management Service manages all aspects of the KnowledgeCite Library web hosting operations, including staffing, Internet access, Compaq Windows NT servers, and contingency planning. The KnowledgeCite databases are stored on an EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage system.
Ciuffetti commented, "Our alliance with EMC clearly has brought the KnowledgeCite Library to market more quickly and cost effectively than if we had chosen to develop and manage this capability on our own. EMC's deep understanding of Web site management and Windows NT operations enables us to focus on improving our product and customer relationships."
"KnowledgeCite's selection of EMC Web Site Management Service for its flagship product launch is further validation of EMC's ability to deliver robust, high-quality services to the burgeoning Internet marketplace," said Jim Fitzgerald, EMC's Vice President of Internet Services. "More companies are coming to EMC to provide the in-depth Internet expertise, advanced software, and high-performance storage solutions they need to fully exploit the potential their Web sites offer."
