McHenry, ILLINOIS -- May 15, 1995 -- Follett Software Company workshops are offered as a service to assist library media specialists in understanding important and timely automation issues. Follett Software Company offers a variety of these educational workshops to inform library media specialists and aides.

With changes in industry standards and advances in library automation, Follett workshops are a cost-effective method to ensure that library media specialists understand current issues. Various workshops are available to benefit all participants, whatever their library automation systems and experience levels.

Follett has conducted workshops for 10 years. From that experience, the company learned to tailor workshops to address specific needs of the participants. Professional and knowledgeable presenters make course content accessible and interesting to library personnel who have a wide range of experience. Participants in Follett workshops can also receive Continuing Education Units.

Workshop topics include Challenges for the Library Media Specialist and Trends in Library Media Technology, Introduction to Networks, AARC2 (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules Revised Edition), two Grant Writing programs (for starting and fine-tuning proposals), and eleven specialized MARC (MAchine Readable Cataloging) sessions. Plans for the future include the subjects of the Internet and On-Line Services. Customers may also choose to have workshops customized for their particular groups. Details on Follett Software Company workshops appear in Follett's new workshop booklet, available from the Educational Services Department.

MARC workshops use exercises and real-life examples to help participants learn the importance of following industry standards in creating MARC records for their systems. Follett's workshop facilitators aid participants in creating accurate MARC records, preparing electronic records for various types of retrospective conversion, and evaluating MARC records from vendors. Because of the variety of MARC workshops offered, library media specialists can select the level and content to meet their specific needs.
