Abstract: Gaylord Information Systems announced that the East Mississippi Regional Library has selected GALAXY as its automation solution. The EMRL system consists of the Bay Springs Municipal Library, the Enterprise Public Library, the Louin Public Library, the Pachuta Public Library, the Quitman Public Library (EMRL headquarters), the Shubuta Public Library, the Stonewall Public Library, and the Mary Weems Parker Memorial Library in Heidelberg, Mississippi.

Syracuse, NY (March 2000). Gaylord Information Systems (GIS) today announced that the East Mississippi Regional Library (EMRL) has selected GIS' GALAXY system as its automation solution.

With stability and ease-of-use as priorities, EMRL required a system that could readily support a collection of 90,000 items. Lorraine Russell, Assistant Director at EMRL, said the library liked the way GALAXY meets staff and patron requirements. "We looked for a system that was user-friendly and easy to learn, yet still robust in functionality. GALAXY is a perfect fit. The system provides a well-designed graphical interface with endless opportunities to customize workflow. It's a tool that will help us keep our libraries at the center of their communities."

EMRL joins more than 500 public libraries that currently use GALAXY as their automation solution. Russell commented, "Like other growing public libraries, we needed a well-designed application on a solid operating system, and GIS has a proven track record of delivering stable automation solutions." As the newest member of the GALAXY family, EMRL is confident that their partnership with GIS positions the library for measured and well-supported future growth. Russell added, "GALAXY is a proven solution, providing an excellent technology foundation for us."

EMRL officials also commented that Gaylord Bros.' solid financial standing and its 100-plus year history in the library industry reassured the library that GALAXY was the right choice. The library noted that the stability of the company, continued product development for the public library market, and compatibility with other products made their decision to go with GALAXY and GIS a relatively easy one. Lorraine Russell concluded, "It helped to know the vendor. We have worked with Gaylord Bros. for years and the organization's tradition of service to libraries made GALAXY a comfortable choice."

EMRL's GALAXY system will be deployed on a DEC AlphaServer 800 5/500 processor configured with 128MB to support 200 simultaneous users. Two 4.3GB disk drives will provide 8.6GB of disk storage to accommodate EMRL's current database of 60,000 MARC records plus a 100 percent anticipated growth in database size. The Ethernet network will use the DECnet network protocol. Other standard network topologies and protocols, such as TCP/IP, can also be used. The GALAXY system can operate on LANs using the PATHWORKS network operating system, as well as on X.25-based WANs.

With GALAXY, EMRL is provided with a true turn-key system. GIS will stage the library's system at its Syracuse, New York offices. The staging includes setup and testing of the GALAXY software and hardware, and loading and testing the library's converted data files. GIS technicians will install all components, including cables and connectors. This "complete" automation service was another factor in EMRL's choice of GALAXY and GIS.

Approximately 70 percent of funding for EMRL's automation project was provided through the Library Services and Technology Act. The total grant of $101,491.00 will be distributed over a two-year period. Thirty percent matching funds of $31,706.00 will be provided by non-government sources. The Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Mississippi Library Commission are grant administrators.

GIS is a Microsoft Certified Solutions Provider and the 25 year-old software development division of Gaylord Bros., a leading supplier to the library industry for over a century. In addition to its library automation systems, GIS offers workflow analysis, retrospective conversion, and database enhancement services to libraries of all types.
