Ex Libris is pleased to announce that this week, the HBZ consortium catalogue (Hochschulbibliothekszentrum Koeln) in Germany switched to production on the schedule. This consortium is the largest ever ALEPH 500 installation using the system for production cataloguing. The record counts involved are:

  • Bibliographic 10 million records
  • Authority 5.5 million records
  • Holdings 25 million records
The system supports 665 concurrent staff and 100 WEB users. The catalogue contains holdings from more than 1300 different libraries. The software runs on a SUN Enterprise 6500.

Libraries in the consortia enter bibliographic records in the central database and add holding information. A new ALEPH catalogue interface is used to download bibliographic records from the server and to send them to non-ALEPH local systems. In addition to that non-ALEPH local systems will get weekly updates containing all centrally new and changed records.

The project, going forward, will also provide online interfaces for the non ALEPH Local systems and implement ILL for the whole consortium.
