MCHENRY, ILLINOIS -- May 6, 1994-- Follett Software Company has joined forces with Research Publications International (RPI) to bring Broadcast News - the market's first broadcast news media CD-ROM reference tool - to the middle/secondary school market.

Developed by RPI and distributed by Follett Software Company, Broadcast News is a fully-indexed, abstracted database containing full-text transcripts of leading television and radio news broadcasts. The program provides access to news items, political debates, foreign reports and worldwide events as seen or heard on American Broadcasting Company (ABC), Cable News Network (CNN), Public Broadcasting System (PBS), and National Public Radio (NPR). Users can search by subject, date, headline, program, anchor, network or virtually any word that appears in the text. Beginning with 1992, the Broadcast News database captures nearly 44,000 full-text transcripts per year from more than 70 radio and television programs, talk shows, interviews, documentaries and special programs.

For people who want to delve deeper into the history and issues surrounding world events, user-friendly research tools have been added to Broadcast News. 'Current Issue' screens allow users to review the most significant issues of any given month; 'Overview' screens place news in context and list additional sources of information; and 'Current Headlines' contains samples of recent broadcasts on a particular topic.

"Access to current and historical news by keystroke revolutionizes the way students seek, analyze and process information in the school environment," says Charles (Chuck) R. Follett, Jr., president of Follett Software Company. "Broadcast News provides a remarkably efficient means of access to countless newsworthy topics, and we're pleased to offer this unique broadcast news program CD-ROM to our customers and their patrons."

Minimal hardware requirements for Broadcast News are: MS-DOS computer (Intel 386SX / 25Mhz or higher processor) or compatible with 4MB RAM; hard disk with 5 MB available storage; high density disk drive (either 5.25 or 3.5); CD-ROM drive with sustained 150KB/second transfer rate; and SVGA (640 X 480) graphics adapter and monitor supporting 16 colors. Software requirements are: MS-DOS operating system version 5.0 or later MS-DOS and MS-DOS CD-ROM Extensions (MSCDEX) version 2.1 or later. Optional hardware includes: Microsoft mouse or 100% compatible pointing device and a printer.
