DUBLIN, Ohio, Sept. 8, 1997 -- Information Dimensions, Inc., a leading provider of web-enabled document management solutions, today signed on Japan's largest information services company, the Kinokuniya Company Ltd., to sell Information Dimensions' BASIS products in the world's second-largest information technology market.
The agreement will bring rapid-deployment, web-based document management to Japan and provide new product offerings for Kinokuniya. The distributor plans to capitalize on the wave of large multinational firms sharing valuable enterprise knowledge in huge collections of complex documents via corporate intranets. Information Dimensions delivers the world's fastest way to publish these collections on the web, BASIS Intranet Solution.
"Japan is a key market for Information Dimensions, and we will be working closely with Kinokuniya as they bring web-based document management to the country's top corporations," said Bill Forquer, president of Information Dimensions. "We are confident that Kinokuniya and BASIS will meet the unique IT, document and library management needs of large customers in Japan."
BASIS products already perform full-text indexing, search and retrieval in Japanese as well as 25 other languages, more than any other document management software. Kinokuniya will localize BASIS, its interface and documentation, then deliver it to Japanese customers.
"Companies in Japan are recognizing the value of making business-critical documents available to their counterparts all over the world," said Mr. Masachi Takai, director of the electronic information marketing division at Kinokuniya. "By deploying corporate intranets, our customers can realize the benefits of truly borderless information sharing with no concern for distance or geography. We are pleased to offer the BASIS product suite to help customers move from paper to the web."
As it helps these customers, Kinokuniya will build on its success selling web-based products such as First Search -- a service that gives library users access to over 60 online databases and more than 1.5 million full-text articles -- developed by OCLC Online Computer Library Center, the world's largest information network.
For more than 70 years, Kinokuniya has been Japan's leading sales network for imported trade, rare and academic books, periodicals, electronic information products, microfilm, music, AV materials, and language tutorials. With annual revenues of nearly $1 billion, Kinokuniya is one of the largest information services in Japan delivering various kinds of information media to its customers. Kinokuniya has long been a partner of OCLC Online Computer Library and is one of its partners in the online database services and library cataloging and data conversion services. Since 1996, Kinokuniya has offered its popular book shop on the Internet (http://bookweb.kinokuniya.co.jp) bringing Japan's largest bookstore directly to consumers.
