McHenry, Illinois -- October 18, 1993 -- Follett Software Company announces the release of a new version of its handheld scanning device, the PHD+. The new release, called the PHD+ II, will operate with Follett's current library and textbook management systems, as well as with the soon-to-be-released Unison software design, which allows for connectivity between core Follett Software products.
An updated model to the PHD+, the new PHD+ II portable barcode scanning device, like the original PHD+, offers the capability of a full-size computer in a light-weight, handheld device. When used in conjunction with Circulation Plus, the PHD+ II performs inventory, remote circulation, title/copy batch updates and deletes, bibliographies and acquisitions through Follett Library Book Company. (Acquisitions through Follett Library Book Company also require an acoustic coupler included with the PHD+ II unit when purchased.) When used with Textbook Plus, the PHD+ II performs inventory, remote circulation and global patron updating and deleting. Information is read into the PHD+ II by simply wanding barcode labels or manually keying information using the alphanumeric keypad. The information is then uploaded into the computer using a cable included with the unit.
The new PHD+ II is capable of holding over twice as many scans as the original PHD+ - up to 5,000 from 2,000. And under the Unison design, the PHD+ II has the capability of reading variable length barcodes, including 14-character barcodes.
Consumers interested in learning more about the PHD+ II, or any of the other products operating under the Unison design, can write Follett Software Company, 809 N. Front Street, McHenry, Illinois, 60050-5589, or call toll-free (800) 323-3397.
