At the seminar on "EDI - The Future of Library Supply" organised jointly by Book Industry Communication and the National Acquisitions Group on Monday November 30th, BLCMP Library Services announced the introduction, early in 1993, of a new service to its 64 member libraries. BLCMP libraries will be able to send messages across the BLCMP dedicated network and, through a gateway to first EDITION, to and from library booksellers.

Tony Hall, Managing Director of BLCMP, noted that this was the latest in a series of developments by BLCMP to smooth the path for libraries pressing ahead with Electronic Data Interchange, "At last it is becoming possible for libraries to realise the benefits of EDI, improving the speed and accuracy of communication, and beginning to reduce the costs involved in the ordering process -

BLCMP will act as a clearing house, processing and redirecting the messages at no charge to its customer libraries. Speaking to the seminar, Tony Hall, who is also Chairman of 610, expressed the view that it was necessary to kick-start EDI into effective operation in the library supply chain. He was confident that this initiative, properly supported by the booksellers, would apply just such a stimulus.

Since first EDITION commenced trading in July with the nine original Companies which constituted the Pilot Project, further subscribers include Transworld Publishers, Macmillan, Hodder & Stoughton, Books Etc, Bertram Books and Reed Book Services. Additional commitments have been received from James Askew & Son, the Holt- Jackson Book Co, Woodfield & Stanley, H & A John, Warwick University Bookshop and International Book Distributors.

"We are particularly delighted at the commitment from BLCMP", commented Mark Hodder-Williams, Managing Director of first EDITION. "It represents a major initiative to facilitate the introduction of electronic trading to the library community supply chain, embracing libraries, library booksellers and the major trade publishing Houses and their distributors".
