Huntsville, AL (December 2, 1996) - Sirsi Corporation announced today the license of UNICORN to Acadia University located in Wolfville, Nova Scotia about 80 miles north of Halifax.

SIRSI's Unicorn Collection Management System, using client/server technology, simplifies and improves the process of managing and accessing library holdings. Its UNIX base allows the flexibility of choosing different platforms, all of which operate with the same software. Its modular design enables users to build on the system's core Z39.50-compliant catalog, choosing and configuring additional modules according to local library needs. The university has purchased several modules including Bibliographic, Circulation, Authority, Serials and Acquisition Control, along with SIRSI's award winning WebCat World Wide Web Catalog access.

Acadia University will install UNICORN on a SUN Solaris Server. The library has selected SIRSI's InfoVIEW graphical client with Z39.50 for Windows. In addition to offering a consistent graphical interface to all staff and patron modules licensed by the library, InfoVIEW provides URL hyperlinks from within the UNICORN catalog to multi-media resources.

Acadia University has been providing students with a leading undergraduate education for close to 160 years. Acadia has rich library resources, a modern art gallery, residence rooms, Page 2 classrooms equipped with state of the art computing capabilities, and a philosophy that places a strong emphasis on learning and living in a supportive environment

Acadia is committed to giving its students the skills, experience, and knowledge they need to grow and to succeed. A tradition of innovation is reflected in The Acadia Advantage - an academic initiative which integrates the use of notebook computers into the undergraduate curriculum. This year 375 students are participating in The Acadia Advantage. Next fall each first-year full-time student will participate, and by the year 2000, all full-time students will be involved.

The Vaughan Memorial Library is the university's information hub, housing a collection of more than half a million items, extensive archives, and an increasing number of electronic resources. The library is a leader in the use of innovative technology at Acadia, with Unicorn replacing their two previous systems. As the university continues to become Canada's premier electronic campus, Unicorn will play a key role in delivering the electronic access the university will demand.
