Huntsville, AL (April 8, 1996) - Sirsi Corporation announced today the license of UNICORN to Florida Institute of Technology, located in Melbourne, Florida.
SIRSI's Unicorn Collection Management System, using client/server technology, simplifies and improves the process of managing and accessing library holdings. Its UNIX base allows the flexibility of choosing different platforms, all of which operate with the same software. Its modular design enables users to build on the system's core Z39.50-compliant catalog, choosing and configuring additional modules according to local library needs.
Florida Tech's Evans Library will install UNICORN on an IBM RISC System/6000 host computer. The library has selected SIRSI's InfoVIEW graphical client with Z39.50 for Windows. In addition to providing a consistent graphical interface to all staff and patron modules licensed by the library, InfoVIEW also provides URL hyperlinks from within the UNICORN catalog to multi-media resources.
Florida Institute of Technology was previously in negotiations with NOTIS for its Horizon system. After visiting Emory University to observe a SIRSI system in operation, UNICORN was selected. Systems & Computer Technology (SCT) provides facility management to Florida Tech and has been granted permission to operate the software on behalf of the institute.
Founded in 1958, Florida Tech has an enrollment of almost 5,000 students. The institute offers more than 120 degree programs in science and engineering, aviation, business, humanities, psychology, and communication. Master's degrees are offered in more than 50 areas of study, and Doctoral degrees available in 18 disciplines. Current library holdings include more than 91,000 books, 145,000 government documents, and an extensive collection of technical journals, including more than 1,800 current subscriptions. The library is staffed by 24 individuals, eight of whom are professional librarians.
