Huntsville, AL (January 21, 1997) - Sirsi Corporation announced today the license of UNICORN to the Inter American University of Puerto Rico. The University is networking 11 libraries throughout the island and is migrating from a DOBIS system. Inter American will provide public access and patron notices through a Spanish interface.
SIRSI's Unicorn Collection Management System, using client/server technology, simplifies and improves the process of managing and accessing library holdings. Its UNIX base allows the flexibility of choosing different platforms, all of which operate with the same software. Its modular design enables users to build on the system's core Z39.50-compliant catalog, choosing and configuring additional modules according to local library needs.
The library will install UNICORN on an IBM RISC System/6000 host computer. The library has selected SIRSI's award winning WebCat and the InfoVIEW graphical client with Z39.50 for Windows. In addition to providing a consistent graphical interface to all staff and patron modules licensed by the library, InfoVIEW also provides URL hyperlinks from within the UNICORN catalog to multi-media resources.
The Inter American University has its central campus and administrative facilities located in San Juan. The library consists of 11 branches located throughout the island with a collective holding of over 450,000 titles. The system will be configured for multi-library operations, sharing a common database while maintaining independent policies within the 11 branches. The site is excited by the opportunity to implement the Spanish version of Unicorn's OPAC and notices for circulation, enhancing the ease of operation for their patrons.
