Provo, Utah epixtech, inc., formerly Ameritech Library Services, announced today that the Hillsborough County Public School System (Hillsborough) will be migrating from their DOBIS system to a Horizon system. With more than 160,000 students, Hillsborough is the twelfth largest school district in the United States. The Horizon system will serve all 165 of the Hillsborough schools through a server and a union catalog.

Hillsborough's new library automation system is part of a comprehensive district technology plan to integrate technology into the classroom and connect students to one another and to the outside world through a local area network and a wide area network with Internet access.

"The Horizon system is part of our technology plan for district wide solutions for efficiency and productivity," explained Dr. Earl Whitlock, the director for Educational Media & Technology at Hillsborough County Public Schools. "Horizon will allow us to get a handle on cataloging and receiving orders and will provide us with information on frequency circulation rates."

Before selecting the Horizon system, Hillsborough went out to bid, and a committee that represented instructional media specialists from senior, middle, and elementary schools reviewed several systems. The evaluation committee gathered data on the available systems by assessing sites around the country that were current users of the products. "We are delighted that the Hillsborough County Public School System has selected our Horizon system," said Lana Porter, president and chief executive officer of epixtech. "The Horizon system will help Hillsborough achieve the goals outlined in their District Technology Plan for greater connectivity for students and access to information. The Horizon system provides seamless integration to the Internet and will allow each school library to customize screens to meet the needs of their students."
