St. Louis, Missouri, April 22, 1999 -- Data Research Associates, Inc. (DRA) (NASDAQ: DRAI) announced today that its Board of Directors has approved an increase in the number of company Directors to six and elected Marilyn Gell Mason to fill the newly created Class C Director seat. Ms. Mason intends to stand for election by all DRA shareholders to the balance of her term as a Class C Director at the company's next annual meeting, which will be held Wednesday, February 16, 2000.
Ms. Mason is about to undertake her announced retirement as Director of the Cleveland Public Library, a post she has held since 1986. In that role, she has had complete administrative responsibility for a major urban library system serving an ethnically diverse population of over 500,000. The system has a main library, 28 branches, a staff of 580, and an annual budget of $50 million. The Main Library is the third largest public research library in the country (after New York and Boston), with holdings of over 8 million items, more than 2 million of which are books. Cleveland Public Library, which has used DRA's software since the late 1970s, also operates Clevnet, the largest fully operational, integrated, automated library system in the country, through which it provides services to 28 additional library systems in northern Ohio with a total annual circulation of approximately 20 million items.
Prior to her tenure at Cleveland Public Library, Ms. Mason's career had also included posts as Director at the Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library and for the White House Conference on Library and Information Science, as well as senior positions at Metrics Research Corporation and King Research Inc. She holds a master's degree in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a master's degree in library science from North Texas State University and has extensively published on issues facing modern urban libraries.
"We are extremely fortunate to have a library leader of Ms. Mason's stature to assist us in setting strategy and policy," said Michael J. Mellinger, DRA's Chairman, President and CEO. "She has repeatedly demonstrated the ability not only to set forth a visionary agenda, but also to ensure that all requirements were met to implement that agenda."
