Gaylord Information Systems (GIS) Sales Director John Richardson announced the hiring of former Data Research Associates employee Claudia Wagner as the new West Coast Account Manager for GIS.
Holding a Masters of Information and Library Studies degree from the University of Michigan, and having worked for several years in library automation, Wagner lost no time in establishing a West Coast presence for GIS. Already, she has announced a plan to dedicate a portion of her summer ALA schedule specifically to meetings with library representatives interested in Polaris, GIS's newly-released, distributed client/server automation system.
"Like any other account manager, I usually spend conference time in a variety of meetings, ranging from talks with current customers, to product demonstrations for potential clients," said Wagner, "but, with the enormous publicity surrounding the release of Polaris, I wanted to be sure that I would be available to answer any questions about the system, from any librarian in my [West Coast] territory."
GIS debuted Polaris at the mid-winter ALA conference, in an unveiling to which Library Journal later referred as: "[possibly] the most significant announcement of the show." (LJ, April 1, 1997, p. 29). According to Wagner, the importance of the new system lies in its great flexibility and adaptability. "Polaris is perfect for consortia, for larger academic libraries and for multiple-branch libraries," she said, "and as the solution for virtually any library automation need that involves a networked environment."
