McHENRY, IL - June 15, 1998 - Follett Software Company has announced the release of its new Z39.50 Server, enabling library collections to be posted on the Internet for access from anywhere in the world. In March, the company announced the availability of its Z39.50 client product, K. Follett Software Company is the first major K-12 library automation vendor to offer a complete Z39.50 solution.
With the new Z39.50 server, a library collection can be posted on the Internet for access by anyone using a Z39.50 client in another library. The Z39.50 client enables patrons and librarians to view and retrieve bibliographic information from collections around the world.
"By providing both a Z39.50 client and server, we're making it possible for K-12 libraries to offer a higher level of service and bring patrons expanded resources to seek out information. When a library staff posts their collection on the Internet, patrons gain quicker, easier access to resources that don't reside in their local library but may exist in a neighboring library," said Tom Schenck, President of Follett Software Company. "Our solution also helps libraries meet state funding requirements-19 states already require libraries to seek out Z39.50 solutions when applying for state funds."
For Use with Award-Winning OPAC
The Z39.50 server works as an add-on module to Follett Software Company's award-winning Catalog Plus for Windows, the company's OPAC software. It operates on Windows NT v4.0.
