Phoenix Public Library has contracted with CARL Corporation to provide its next generation library automation system.

CARL will install its Information Management and Delivery System (IMDS) in the Phoenix Public Library's Central Library and 12 branches in early 1999. The Phoenix Public Library collection numbers over 600,000 titles and 1,900,000 physical items, serves over 675,000 users, and circulates 6.5 million items each year. Phoenix Public will be converted from its current Dynix and Innovative Interfaces systems.

The city of Phoenix and the library serves a rapidly growing population, and is the sixth largest city in the country. In addition to its core catalog of holdings, Phoenix Public Library offers its users access to multiple electronic and web-based information resources, as well as a full range of community oriented reference services. The library also is a leader in ADA compliance among public libraries and has one of the oldest and most experienced library assistive technology centers in the United States.

“Phoenix Public Library requires a powerful combination of practicality and vision in its next library management system,” said Patricia Culkin, CARL President. “CARL is looking forward to this challenge, and to partnering with Phoenix Public in pursuit of innovative access and management solutions.”

By selecting CARL, Phoenix joins several other large urban public libraries in the CARL customer base, including three of the four largest cities in the country, noted Culkin, adding that CARL is fortunate to have its development directions informed by many powerful and committed institutions.
