The library of the Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (UNISINOS), has selected ALEPH500 from Ex Libris as their new library automation system.

In the southern-most state of Brazil, UNISINOS is located in the city of Sao Leopoldo, the cradle of the German colonization of the country. As a Jesuit institution, the university was conceived and structured as an educational institution where integral human development is fostered through undergraduate, graduate and extension programs, research projects and community outreach and cultural action programs.

Being a leader in library automation in Brazil, UNISINOS developed their own system, which has been serving the needs of the students, faculty and community for years. In the major commitment to continue to provide their constituents the best environment for learning and research, the university have begun to build a state-of-the-art new library and will include ALEPH.

Providing library services to over 25,000 undergraduate students, almost 1,000 graduate students, faculty and numerous extension programs for the community, required a system that had both the ability to deal with the diverse need of the users, yet give researchers the tools to support comprehensive study.

Head of the project, Andr? Rafael dos Santos, said, "After examining alternatives for over 6 years, UNISINOS selected ALEPH as being the right system at the right time. A combination of functionality, support and position in the life-cycle has given us the confidence to change from the system that has served us well over the years. We look forward to being more responsive to our users, and ALEPH will be a welcome improvement for students and staff."

With 400,000 books and numerous serials and others materials, UNISINOS will initially offer ALEPH on 30 staff terminals and 100 OPAC stations. The initial modules of Cataloging, OPAC and Circulation will be operational in the second half of 1999.

ALEPH is now in use in over 450 installations in 39 countries. Ex Libris World Headquarters are in Israel with offices in Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv. The company also maintains sales and support offices in the USA, Brazil, Argentina, Luxembourg, UK and Germany, and has exclusive distributors in Scandinavia, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal and South Africa.
