Abstract: 3M's Electronic Article Surveillance Systems has introduced an automatic checkout system for libraries. With this system, patrons can learn to check out books and materials on their own. The system must be installed in libraries that use the 3M Library Security System and an automatic circulation system. Patrons simply insert their library cards into a scanner which identifies the patron. The system teaches the patron how to check out materials by running them through a scanner. A patron with problems, such as overdue books, is referred to the front desk for assistance.
