The Kuali Foundation announced today that the Kuali Coeus (KC) Functional Council has voted to engage with KualiCo for product development leadership. KualiCo is a new company that delivers cloud-based software for higher education. Kuali Coeus is a modular suite of open source research administration software designed specifically for higher education and delivered via the cloud by KualiCo.

At its recently concluded Kuali Days conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, KC Functional Council members expressed enthusiasm about the new opportunities made possible by this agreement. KualiCo will lead a single product development team, while the KC Functional Council will continue to set priorities for the expenditure of foundation funds. By engaging with KualiCo, the project team will now be able to develop products more efficiently. "Voting to engage with KualiCo is a vote for the long-term health of Kuali Coeus," said Lori Schultz, member of the KC Board and Director for Research Advancement at the University of Arizona.

"Kuali Coeus has set the standard for research administration software," states Joel Dehlin, KualiCo Chief Executive Officer. "Together, KualiCo and the Kuali Coeus community will accelerate the improvement of a product that is already world-class." Coeus began at MIT in 1995. In 2005, MIT invited other universities to join the Coeus Consortium to enable long-term sustainability of its research administration tool as a shared resource. In 2008, the Coeus Consortium Steering Committee developed a product roadmap and technology transition plan, licensed its code to the Kuali Foundation, and enabled the development of Kuali Coeus on an open source platform.

"Over the next several weeks, the Kuali Coeus community will begin to engage with KualiCo by mutually defining our partnership and developing new relationships with the talent pool being assembled at KualiCo," stated Stephen Dowdy, Project Director for the Kuali Coeus Board and Director of Research Information and Systems at MIT. "The Kuali Coeus Functional Council's decision to fully engage with KualiCo will insure that the higher education community continues to have a state-of-the-art, best-of-breed research administration system into the next decade."
