Abstract: Mr. Alan Kelly, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government announced that a contract has been signed by the Local Government Management Agency with Innovative Interfaces Global Limited for the supply and implementation of a single library management system for all public libraries in Ireland.

Mr. Alan Kelly, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government has today (31 Oct 2014) announced that a contract has been signed by the Local Government Management Agency with Innovative Interfaces Global Limited for the supply and implementation of a single library management system for all public libraries in Ireland.

The Minister said, "The introduction of a single library system for public libraries across the country is a ground-breaking initiative, the first of its kind in Europe and will provide significant benefits to the public. All of the individual library collections from every local authority library across the country will be included in the new management system, offering the public access to the library collections, resources and digital content of all public libraries in one search."

The system will enable the introduction of a number of new services such as a single membership card across all public libraries, universal membership for all children and a virtual library; each of these are services planned under the Public Library Strategy 2013-2017, Opportunities for All, published in December 2013. This is a progressive programme for the development and enhancement of public library services for the next five years.

"With the implementation of a single library system, the quality and strength of the library collections will be enhanced, more discerning purchasing will be enabled and resource-sharing between libraries will increase because of the ease with which users will be able to search the wide range of collections from other libraries," said Minister Kelly.

The single library system for all local authority public libraries will deliver on the Government's agenda to reduce costs, drive efficiency and improve services to the citizen. It will maximise accessibility, cost-efficiency, reach and impact and will provide more detailed management and usage information which will be used to drive further service improvements for the public.

Innovative Interfaces Global Limited, which is a provider of library technology, was founded in 1978, has its headquarters in California and came to Ireland in 2012. Innovative is expanding its Dublin operation, adding 25 jobs at its European headquarters in Dublin, bringing the employment there to 50 by the end of 2015. Innovative today has more than 2,400 library systems installed in 9,500 libraries, spanning the globe in 66 countries.
