Phoenix, Arizona) - August 2, 2005 - This week the Maricopa County Library District announced their latest service, a virtual library offering library customers 24/7 access to an online collection of hundreds of downloadable digital Audiobooks and eBooks. With the new service, customers can now logon, check out, and download a digital book anytime of day. The digital books can be enjoyed on customer's own computer or transferred to a portable device like a PDA, Smartphone, or a portable audio device. Library customers can also burn audio books to a standard CD, making it easy to enjoy them in the comfort of their air-conditioned living room, cars, or anywhere they like. The online library is available to all Maricopa County Library District customers by visiting http://mcld.maricopa.gov.

The collection, which includes hundreds of titles in nearly every genre, was custom built by library staff to fit the reading and listening tastes of the growing area's library customers. From Nora Roberts to Mark Twain, the library offers access to hundreds of titles including fiction, mysteries, romance, nonfiction, best-sellers, and more.

To access materials customers simply visit the library's Web site, install the free software, browse and choose titles; and when they're ready, checkout and download the digital titles to their home computers. When the lending period is up, the digital books expire, and are automatically returned--eliminating late fees!

The library's eBooks, which are digital versions of books, can be read on a home PC, laptop, Macintosh, Smartphone, Palm OS device, or PocketPC. Digital audio books can be enjoyed on a PC, supported portable audio devices, or burned to a standard audio CD. The technology for the new service is provided through OverDrive, the national leader in downloadable media for libraries.

A valid Maricopa County Library District library card and a computer with Internet access is all library customers need to get started. The digital library is available by visiting http://mcld.maricopa.gov.
