PARK RIDGE, IL - 07/12/04) -- Park Ridge Public Library's new online eBook service (http://parkridge.lib.overdrive.com) is giving city residents access to popular eBooks from any internet-connected computer. OverDrive, Inc., a leading vendor of eBook solutions for libraries, supplied the technology for the new service. The library, located in the north suburban area of Chicago, serves roughly 40,000 patrons and circulates almost 700,000 volumes annually.

"We are proud to be the first in Illinois to offer OverDrive eBooks, and we can't wait for other libraries to join us," said Janet Van De Carr, Park Ridge Library Director. The eBook service will eventually be shared with other members of the North Suburban Library System. "This is a great way to demonstrate how libraries lead technology innovation while providing a service our patrons will really use," she added. "Our eBooks will be especially popular with commuters because the technology is so easy and portable." eBooks can be read on PDAs, Pocket PCs, and Smartphones, in addition to PCs, laptops, or Macs.

The Library's eBook collection includes bestsellers and classics, fiction and non-fiction from popular authors and leading publishers such as HarperCollins, McGraw-Hill, Zondervan, and John Wiley and Sons. Patrons download free reader software and then use their Park Ridge library cards to check out and download eBooks. eBooks are available in Adobe PDF format and Mobipocket format. eBooks are automatically returned.

The system was paid for with special funds provided by the Bruce A. Michel Library Trust. The trust was begun six years ago as a bequest and funds are designated exclusively for Park Ridge library's technology projects. "Technology that enhances and expands our breadth of services is part of the Park Ridge Public Library vision. eBooks and digital media are the future, so it's wonderful to be able to deliver cutting edge technology to our patrons today," stated Van De Carr.
