February 7, 2014 -- Columbus, OH. Booksite announced today that version 2.3.1 of POCA, the cloud based, system-independent catalog overlay and discovery layer has been released. POCA has integrated additional custom applications with the new VuFind 2.1 version, for the Catalog Overlay portion of this release. The most visible change is POCA's Unified Search Bar providing patrons a single source for searching library catalog and database content. Incorporated in this release is the POCA consolidated patron account module that allows for the deep integration of patron activity and holdings to include externally processed eBook lending options with internal library ILS patron activity. The scope of mobile responsive pages from POCA was also significantly expanded.

Newly added in this release by POCA/portal, the embedded Discovery Layer component of POCA, is patron-friendly accessibility to HathiTrust's depository of free public domain eBooks. From the POCA Unified Search Bar, library patrons can search and download these eBooks carried by HathiTrust and other depositories, as well as search Gale Virtual Reference Library holdings.

POCA/records, the records processing and enhancement component of POCA, was expanded to include retail oriented indexes tied to popularity, themes, and subjects to enhance the search experience of patrons. A specialized eBook record processing routine was added by POCA/records to allow an intuitive presentation of electronic resources for multi-branch libraries, for patron convenience. POCA/records also continued expansion of alternative sourcing for enhancement content, significantly expanding presentations of DVD holdings.

Dave Miller, Vice President, New System Implementations added, "The POCA 2.3.1 release lays the groundwork for the aggressive expansion of our POCA/portal component where we can openly access the resources libraries want to provide their patrons, whether within the walls of the library, through external licensing arrangements, directly from content publishers, open internet collections, eBook lending vendors, or statewide buying groups. We look for options to expand and costs to drop as these connections are added."
