Blacksburg, VA. Drupal is an open source content management system, which is very popular among libraries and librarians. It offers thousands of options for libraries to create unique and customized information access for their user community. VTLS Inc. has introduced Drupal Services, which is a combination of custom Drupal modules, consulting and development services. Drupal Services will allow libraries to leverage their internal resources and provide attractive and robust implementations for their users.

The VTLS approach is twofold. First, VTLS has developed custom Drupal modules and APIs in VTLS software products to allow seamless integration of the VTLS Chamo Social OPAC, the VTLS VITAL Access Portal and VTLS Chivas Discovery tool with Drupal. These modules allow the creation of custom interfaces in Drupal by the library that are flexible and extensible to incorporate the full range of Drupal website options. Second, VTLS offers expertise in developing complete solutions that include Drupal integration for libraries. These services can be consulting services and software development services. The software development services may be used to implement designs created by the library and consulting services typically include design and development.

The custom Drupal Modules developed by VTLS include a Service Module and a Display Module to allow "out-of-the-box" Drupal integration. In addition, VTLS supports, and will continue to support, dozens (currently 37) of open-source Drupal modules that have been tested with the VTLS custom Drupal modules and are guaranteed to be compatible. Exciting new OPAC/Discovery features have already been implemented through Drupal, including the use of QR codes to allow users to capture information from the library catalog or repository with their cell phone, the ability to produce custom Web 2.0-style tag clouds and the integration of slide shows that allow dynamic display of any content in the Drupal CMS. Institutions worldwide are starting to take advantage of these services.

"VTLS has long been a leader in providing innovative solutions, and our work with Drupal is the latest example," observed Vinod Chachra, President and CEO of VTLS. "There is a lot of buzz about Drupal in the library community, and we are excited to have the opportunity to help our customers take full advantage of the Drupal capabilities."
