Danvers, Mass., – Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), a not-for-profit organization that is a leading provider of copyright licensing solutions, announced the opening of its European subsidiary, RightsDirect. To better meet the needs of multinational corporate customers, CCC has hired Kim Zwollo as General Manager; Victoriano Colodrón as Executive Director, Collective Licensing and Operations; and Kate Alzapiedi as Business Development Director.

Zwollo is responsible for establishing and leading RightsDirect, building key relationships throughout Europe, and driving the overall growth of European corporate license sales. Prior to joining RightsDirect, he worked for Springer Science + Business Media in various international roles for nine years. Most recently he was Executive Vice President, Sales for the EMEA (South Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region, which included responsibility for third party licensing and rights and permissions.

Colodrón is tasked with expanding relationships with European publishers, authors and their representatives. Prior to joining RightsDirect, he had served from 2000 to 2009 as Deputy CEO of Centro Español de Derechos Reprográficos (CEDRO), the Spanish Reproduction Rights Organization. Before CEDRO, Colodron was Subdirector General and Technical Advisor of Library Coordination at the Spanish Ministry of Culture.

Alzapiedi, working directly with European-headquartered corporations to meet their licensing needs, has extensive business development and management experience from various roles at Elsevier Publishing and Excerpta Medical Communications. As Commercial Director at Elsevier she was responsible for global non-subscription sales and reprint rights across the Science & Technology division.

RightsDirect enables rightsholders and users in Europe to have access to voluntary licensing systems that have been available in the U.S. for many years. The Multinational License sold through RightsDirect includes the rights to share content worldwide from millions of information sources, which include:

  • Emailing articles to co-workers in more than 180 countries
  • Posting content on an intranet site
  • Including copies of published material with submissions to government regulatory agencies
  • Photocopying and distributing articles at company meetings

"The impetus for opening a European subsidiary was increasing market demand and existing customer feedback," said Tracey Armstrong, president and chief executive officer of CCC. "We’ll continue to work collaboratively with the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organizations (IFRRO), as well as targeted, like-minded local partners and Reproduction Rights Organizations (RROs) as we launch RightsDirect."

RightsDirect representatives will be attending the 2010 IFRRO Annual General Meeting, hosted by CCC, in Boston, Mass. Oct. 25-28.
