BIRMINGHAM, Ala., USA – January 26, 2010 – EBSCO is celebrating its fourth year of sponsoring Open Days, bringing together people involved in the information supply chain and providing a convenient and beneficial open communication platform throughout major cities in Europe. From March to June 2010, the theme "Building the Library of the Future" will help library directors, librarians, academic information managers, e-resources managers, serials and e-books acquisition specialists as well as corporate information professionals come together to discuss a variety of topics such as industry trends, experiences and best practices, and products and services.

During the last 10 years, the role of librarians has changed and deeply evolved. They have had to reposition themselves in order to survive in their ever-changing environment. They also have to provide support, training and add value for users, who are increasingly "Google savvy" and are able to independently carry out their own research, without fully realising the unlimited value of a library collection.

Most recently, in addition to carrying out their main role and providing invaluable support and training, librarians also have to become contract/licence managers and marketing executives. It is here that EBSCO is available to assist them in this new approach, by providing them with consultative services and next-generation library solutions, including its newest products:

  • EBSCONET ERM Essentials: This full-featured electronic resource management (ERM) system offers single-point access to all areas of e-resource administration. In addition, because of its complete integration with the EBSCO Integrated Knowledge Base, a tremendous amount of data pertaining to a library’s e-collection can automatically be populated, saving countless hours of valuable staff time.
  • EBSCO Discovery Service: A core collection of locally indexed metadata creating a unified index of an institution’s resources within a single, customizable search point, providing everything the researcher needs in one place—fast, simple access to the library’s full text content, deeper indexing and more full-text searching of more journals and magazines than any other discovery service.

The Open Day series offers the opportunity to make valuable contacts within a single day, providing publishers with excellent exhibitor opportunities in which to share their e-content product information with attendees. In this context, EBSCO will offer numerous meeting, seminar and workshop options to help create an open forum among information services professionals.

Delphine Dufour, European Marketing Manager at EBSCO, explained, "These Open Days provide information professionals a chance to learn more about what is currently happening in their markets with face-to-face meetings in an enjoyable atmosphere. At EBSCO we have been developing solutions to help librarians build the library of the future. These Open Days allow our attendees to learn more about the innovative tools we’ve created to make their jobs easier and more efficient."

The Open Day tour includes the following cities: Algiers, Amsterdam, Bath, Birmingham (UK), Bloemfontein, Bordeaux, Brussels, Cape Town, Cardiff, Copenhagen, Dublin, Durban, East London, Edinburgh, Geneva, Helsinki, Johannesburg, Leeds, London, Lyon, Madrid, Milan, Oslo, Paris, Stockholm and Tallinn.
