January 17, 2010 -- Emeryville, CA. Innovative announced today that Encore Discovery now offers deep article integration to promote the most relevant article content alongside catalog results, making articles more findable through facets and other discovery tools. This new feature set is native to Encore—not federated search—but a solution that streams enhanced data directly from content providers via modern Web Services to deliver faster results and a superior user experience. Unlike other products on the market, Encore prominently presents articles that are relevant and timely within the context of a discovery experience that spans the complete breadth of a library's collection.
"Encore Discovery allows libraries to offer the universe of books and articles while providing discovery tools that ensure user success," says John McCullough, Vice President, Encore Division at Innovative. "With deep article integration, the scope and effectiveness of Encore just got a whole lot bigger."
McCullough continues: "Encore Discovery reflects the combined intelligence of the library's collection development efforts, controlled vocabularies of both print and electronic articles, along with the intelligence of Encore's search algorithms. All three ingredients are essential to enable libraries to provide the best possible discovery experience."
"Encore Discovery is the only solution that provides users with easy access to both articles and books without sacrificing the relevance of either," adds Sarah Hickman Auger, Product Manager at Innovative. "Now Encore's deep article integration extends the power of discovery tools such as facets and related searches to finding the best scholarly content and recent news."
On an initial search, Encore previews top article results in the catalog results view, promoting the most current scholarly content on the very first page. Encore exposes the abstract content for each article (to aid in evaluation), and whenever possible, a direct link to the full text is included on the browse display. An articles format facet allows users to focus exclusively on article results, and article-specific facets can refine results to full-text or peer-reviewed materials. What's more, Encore leverages its Did You Mean? algorithm to help users clarify and continue searches on the article screen; and a tag cloud driven by library subject headings and community tags guides users to related searches for articles. Deep article integration is available to any library using Encore 3.3 and higher, and the newest features are showcased in Encore 4.0.
