Birmingham, Ala., -- Jan. 15, 2010. Librarians have been waiting for an electronic resource management (ERM) solution that actually helps libraries manage e-resources by simplifying the work involved rather than complicating it.
With the release of EBSCONET ERM Essentials, EBSCO breaks new ground on the ERM landscape by delivering a system that features unprecedented auto-population of holdings and data, making it the most effective ERM solution available. While the Digital Library Federation's Electronic Resource Management Initiative (ERMI) influenced the development of ERM Essentials, EBSCO's role as part of the "e" supply chain allows ERM Essentials to go beyond offerings of other electronic resource management systems.
EBSCO provides all the features one would expect from a comprehensive ERM system in a single, centralized source where data is readily available for complete e-collections management, including key services like simple searching and browsing of the library's e-collection and orders, workflow management via reminders and tasks, management of trials and renewals, and the ability to gather data for analyzing and evaluating holdings.
Where ERM Essentials differs from other ERM systems is through its integration with EBSCO's subscription management tools and services—a combination that results in the most powerful e-resource solution available to libraries. ERM Essentials can automatically update holdings and coverage for a library's e-resources plus auto-populate approximately 100 data elements pertaining to a library's e-journals and e-packages, simplifying the management of license details, access information and other order-specific information.
"Even though ERM systems have been available for a number of years, processes surrounding e-resources are still complex and librarians continue to struggle with the tremendous volume of information needed to effectively manage their e-resources," said Oliver Pesch, Chief Strategist of E-Resources at EBSCO. "We are excited to be able to offer, in ERM Essentials, a system that reduces both complexity and workload."
ERM Essentials is designed to work directly "out of the box" with very little start-up effort. This new solution offers true integration as it shares the EBSCO Integrated Knowledge Base with EBSCONET, EBSCO A-to-Z, LinkSource, EBSCOhost Integrated Search (EHIS), and EBSCOhost databases with SmartLinks linking technology. Resources that are purchased through EBSCO are automatically updated in the EBSCO Integrated Knowledge Base, which means multiple systems are updated once, saving time and resources on the library end.
EBSCO has a strong commitment to developing products and services that address the increasing needs of its library customers—ERM Essentials is a product expected to evolve with libraries' evolving needs for e-resource management. A usage consolidation module is in development and additional releases to ERM Essentials are planned for enhanced workflow management and consortia management. ERM Essentials helps librarians free up time spent on e-resource management so they can focus directly on user needs.
