SYDNEY, Australia - March 6, 2003 - Hutt City in New Zealand has chosen to take advantage of the powerful library search tool created by the integration of Syndetic Solutions, Inc.'s catalogue enrichment services with Geac's Web OPAC, GeoWeb. This integration adds a new dimension to the research and display capabilities of GeoWeb with the inclusion of full cover images of newly published titles which are linked to additional information such as author notes, reviews and table of contents. By enriching the Libraries' database with supplemental dynamic data describing the material contained in the database both patrons and staff alike will be able to use this data as a tool to optimise the Libraries' collection. In providing a better means to determine appropriate and relevant material the Libraries hope to save both staff and patron's time, enhance the user's experience, ensure continued high levels of user satisfaction with library service, and increase material circulation numbers.
Hutt City Libraries provide public library resources, services, programmes and facilities for residents at eight locations around Hutt City. The city of close to 100,000 people is situated in the southern tip of the North Island of New Zealand across the harbour from the capital Wellington. Hutt City employs 62 full time staff to provide approximately 300,000 items to patrons living within a 20 km radius and prides itself in its unique historical collections on the Hutt Valley.
Andrew Peacocke, Support Services Manager at Hutt City Libraries explains their decision, "Staff wanted to add interest to the catalogue, enhance it's usefulness for customers searching from home, generate increased demand for material and ensure its effectiveness as aselection tool to help users determine the most relevant item for a particular subject". He further states, "The inclusion of the cover image enlivens the catalogue searching experience, and the reviews summaries and tables of contents assist in selection of those items c the shelf or a decision to hold an item which is currently on loan'. 0 the implementation and support of the Syndetic's product, Mr. Peacocke notes, "Syndetic Solutions integrates in a seamless fashior with our catalogue. There have been no technical problems following implementation and there is absolutely no maintenance work required".
"By integrating the various Syndetic Solutions' catalogue enrichment services into their Libraries' Web catalogue, Hutt City has not only enhanced the look of their Libraries on the Web with book cover art, but they have also given their users a unique selection tool through access to critical reviews, table of contents, annotations and summaries," describes Phil Smith, General Manager of Asia Pacific, Geac Library Systems. "We are delighted by the positive feedback tl Libraries have received since implementing the service and believe that it will help the Libraries achieve their goals for ensuring the delivery of high customer service as well as increased collection circulation."
