Abstract: Nine K-12 school library professionals, representing a cross-section of district levels and geographic locations, have been named to an advisory group formed by Follett Software Company, the partner that more than half of America’s school districts trust to help them manage everything from library resources and school assets to information for data-driven decision making.

MCHENRY, Ill., Sept. 9, 2009 – Nine K-12 school library professionals, representing a cross-section of district levels and geographic locations, have been named to an advisory group formed by Follett Software Company, the partner that more than half of America’s school districts trust to help them manage everything from library resources and school assets to information for data-driven decision making.

The board members of the Destiny Library Manager Advisory Group met for the first time recently in Chicago and will assist Follett Software to accomplish several goals, including evaluating existing products and services, providing a vehicle for customer input in product development and defining critical issues in the educational environment.

Used in nearly 30,000 K-12 schools across 3,000 districts, Destiny Library Manager is the industry-leading, web-based library management software that helps transform the library into a centralized knowledge resource center to support 21st century learning goals for students and educators.

"We anticipate that the feedback and recommendations we receive from our nine thought leaders will aptly reflect the perspectives of our larger customer base," said Tom Schenck, president, Follett Software Co. "Ideally, these discussions will help us validate our strategic initiatives and develop our products and services to meet the changing needs of K-12 education."

Schenck, along with four other Follett Software Co. employees, met with the group for the first time in Chicago. The board members, each of whom has each made a two-year commitment, are:

  • Mary Barbee, coordinator of information and library services, Gwinnett County Board of Education, Suwanee, Ga.
  • Dorothy Frechette, executive director, RILINK, Warren, R.I.
  • Carl Harvey, district librarian media specialist, Noblesville Schools, Noblesville, Ind.
  • Susan Roman, dean, graduate school of library and information science, Dominican University, River Forest, Ill.
  • Ida Thompson, technology coordinator, Richland 1, Columbia, S.C.
  • Joanne Wald, media cataloger, Osseo ISD, Maple Grove, Minn.
  • Connie Williams, librarian, Petaluma (Calif.) City School District
  • Paula Yohe, director of technology, Dillon (S.C.) School District Two
  • Jeanne Ziemba, media specialist, St. Lucie Schools, Fort Pierce, Fla.

The board tackled several subjects in its initial meeting, including "Libraries of the Future," which generated a free-wheeling, enlightening discussion.

"Even today we are still dealing with the digital divide," Ida Thompson observed. "We continue to survey our community to determine how many of our families actually have access to the Internet – who can get to the school resources once they walk out the building? That number isn’t going down, believe it or not. So you have to make sure information is portable and available for everybody in the learning community while you are trying to make sure you have all the online tools to improve access."

Follett Software Co. also is in the midst of forming a similar advisory group for Destiny Textbook Manager.
