June 8, 2009 -- Emeryville, CA. Innovative announced today that the Saskatchewan Information and Library Services Consortium will install the Millennium ILS and use Encore as a discovery interface for the collections of the province's 10 public library systems across 320 locations. The Consortium is a new partnership among public libraries in the Canadian Province of Saskatchewan, which covers an area of 250,000 square-miles and has a population of over one million. The Millennium implementation, by virtue of the number of branch libraries, will be one of the largest implementations of a single Millennium system in the world. The libraries are migrating from SirsiDynix Horizon and other ILS systems.
"There is a history of cooperation in the province that includes reciprocal borrowing and interlibrary loan agreements, as well as over a decade of partnering on the delivery of e-library services," says Zenon Zuzak, Director of Saskatoon Public Library. "SILS represents a big step forward in providing the technology solutions to achieve even more of the vision of seamless access for all users. We see the new consortium as a huge enhancement for equitable library service throughout the province. We needed a technology provider that would provide a single interface that would work in a variety of situations, whether in diverse communities with immigrant populations, rural and city areas, joint school/public libraries and central headquarters operations. In short, we need to serve the growing needs of the province and help all libraries meet the challenge of the knowledge economy."
Regional libraries have other challenges around the province, particularly in the north. Zuzak continues: "We need to think of services with distance in mind. For the current federation of northern libraries, distance between service points is a big issue. Northern public libraries have been created primarily in partnership with schools so we see Innovative products as the way to bring it all together. The new Innovative products facilitate one library card, one search through Encore with direct requesting from branches and a common user experience for all residents of the province."
The Consortium also selected Innovative's Content Pro digital library solution and will launch the Research Pro federated-search tool to offer province-wide access to over a hundred subscription resources.
Key Innovative Products
For such a large undertaking, the Consortium gave thought to the company that would deliver its new technology services. Says Zuzak: "We were looking at three factors. First, we were convinced that Innovative was a stable company, and, secondly, a forward-thinking company. Lastly, staff responsiveness is a very big factor and, to date, Innovative has shown that in our relationship. They know what the Consortium is all about."
