Blacksburg, VA – VTLS is proud to announce that the Bibliothèque Nationale du Royaume du Maroc (BNRM) – the National Library of Morocco – has signed a contract for Virtua for their library automation needs. With over 70,000 bibliographic records, BNRM is VTLS’ first customer in Morocco and a welcome addition to the prestigious family of national libraries who use VTLS worldwide.

Created in 1919 as "Bibliothèque Générale," the library expanded in 1926 to host archives and renamed itself the "Bibliothèque Générale et des Archives (BGA)." The library then grew as a public institution with the mission to collect, centralize and provide easy access to all documents and information related to Morocco. In 1932 the library added legal deposits to its collection. In 2003, BGA expanded once more to house and catalog all legal and public information becoming the current BNRM of today.

"We are honored with the opportunity to work with the National Library of Morocco," said Dr. Vinod Chachra, CEO of VTLS Inc. "It pleases us that this institution selected Virtua and is the first national library in Africa who chose Virtua to provide a comprehensive integrated environment for managing books, documents and archives."

"By choosing Virtua, we are looking into more functionality that will increase the quality of our work, methods and services for our patrons," said M. Abderrahim Ameur, Head of Technical Services Division and Project Manager at the National Library of Morocco. "For the National Library, the automation project is our first priority and should ultimately enable us to provide an example for the rest of the nation."

The National Library of Morocco has a scheduled go live date of July 2008.

The National Library of Morocco joins a long list of National libraries worldwide that have chosen VTLS for their automation. These libraries include Swiss National Library, National Library of Wales, National Library of Pakistan, National Library of Australia, National Library of Slovakia, National Library of Azerbaijan, National Library of Malaysia, National Library of Singapore, National Library of India, National Library of Ireland and the special collection of International ISSN Centre.
